The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Covington, Georgia began operating on September 1, 1901. The first Coast Guard Station was built at the mouth of the River Savannah. In 1912, a new station was erected on the present site of Harbour Island. In 1917, a new station was erected on the east side of the river just upstream from downtown Covington. On December 15, 1921, Coastal Command Headquarters was moved to Point Lookout and all game wardens were transferred to this headquarters. The Coast Guard Auxiliary became an independent agency within the Department of Defense on October 1, 1946. In 1951, a new station was constructed at Terminal Island and in 1977 another at Ponce de Leon Island. In 1984 a new station was erected near Greece-on-the-Rocket Beach to replace an old station which had been destroyed by Hurricane Andrew. A command tower and control room for both terminals were also constructed at this time. In 1990 a Station Building for Administration/Operations purposes replaced an earlier facility which had been damaged by Hurricane Floyd. This building is located on Harbor Island across from current day Harbour Landing Inn & Resort where it currently stands as part ofbackup services for the original terminal facilities that were not damaged by Floyd but did experience extensive damage including water infiltration and fire damage beyond repair! On July 21st 2003 our newest Station – Coveport Marina – opened its doors with much fanfare due to its unique setting atop cove formed by two long estuary extending into Roanoke Sound providing outstanding views of navigation hazards along both coasts while also creating prime real estate for commercial development ashore! Covington, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by General James H. Covington and his wife Elizabeth Whitman. The first post office was established in Covington on September 14, 1853. The present courthouse was built in 1907 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire in 1886. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 8,902 people, 3,527 households, and 2,811 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,591 people per square mile (604/km²). The first Coast Guard gift was a watch. The Coast Guard purchased their first chronograph watches in 1915 and started wearing them on duty. Chronographs are timepieces that have a quartz movement and can be set to track specific dates or time periods. They were very important to the Coast Guard because they could keep track of the time during exercises and missions outside of the United States. The second Wave of gifts started in the late 1940s with radios. Radio equipment was scarce at that time, so many coast guard stations used surplus military radios from World War II for their coastal protection patrols. These radios were usually equipped with short-wave bands which made them very effective for communication between stations, as well as for tracking safety issues such as weather conditions. In 1969, the Coast Guard began giving away cars as gifts. This was an idea come from Commodore John Ritchie who was then the Commandant of the New York Police Department’s Fifth Precinct. He wanted to show appreciation to law enforcement officers across America by providing them with new and collectible cars. In 1974, they began giving out boats as gifts too, starting with a small motorboat called HMCS Acadia (later replaced by CGHS Acadia). Covington is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,003 at the 2010 census. Covington is home to the Covington School District and the Covington Baptist Church. The first people to live in what is now Covington were Native Americans. They arrived from upriver in what is now Alabama. The land around present-day Covington was acquired by the United States government through a land grant from Spain in 1819. The first white settlers arrived in 1821, when James Auld purchased 3,000 acres of land near present-day downtown Covington from the Creek Nation. The town began as a farming community with only a few houses built until 1828 when John Kirby opened his store on Broad Street. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson signed an act that created the city of Atlanta and gave all of Fulton County to it including present-day Covington. As part of this gift, Atlanta donated 240 acres (100 hectares) west of downtown for use as a township or village called "Macon". This township never grew large enough to become its own municipality and eventually evolved into today's City ofAtlanta annexed by Atlanta on July 15th, 1901 under then- Mayor Itzin's leadership after Atlantans voted 99% in favor of annexation over objections from some residents who wanted their neighborhoods kept separate; these neighborhoods are still known collectively as "Old Cobb" because they were once part of Cobb County (now Marietta). In 1865, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, General William Taney made available 2 square miles (5 km²) northwest of downtown for black citizens who had been suffering discrimination at state hands since reconstruction began two years earlier; this area became known as Black Fayetteville Township which later included parts of northeast Atlanta along with much rural north Fulton County including present day portions of Brunswick and Auburn countiesqqv Cobb County commissioners voted not to sell any more property within city limits because they believed that such sales would only benefits Atlantans' recently integrated African American citizens at the expenseof Caucasian landownersqvw Nashville businessman Edwin Hodge offered $10 per acre ($2/acre) for vacant lots lying east and south of Ellingwood Road between Coffeepump Creek Rd./Dalhousie Blvd./Fulton Rd./Lakeview Ave., which he dubbed Negro Ghetto although there was no racial segregation then nor does there currently be one qwx In 1906 Vincent Canby reported that "[a]pox has ruined several hundred families near Decatur Stables...the negroes have lost their homes...almost all those living within three blocks [of Decatur] must leave owing to fear lest they should catch typhoid or some other deadly disease."
