In 1881, Cordele was founded by English colonists as a trading post on the lower Savannah River. The town's history began with cattle drives from Texas that stopped at Cordele for supplies in 1876 and 1877. Reverend James Auld, an Episcopal missionary who had come to Georgia to help evangelize black people, founded Cordele Congregational Church in 1880. He named it after his home town of Cowperthorpe in Lancashire, England In 1888, Cordele became a city when it merged with nearby Carrollton and later Dahlonega. The merger created one of the largest cities in Georgia with a population over 100,000 people and helped spur economic development within its boundaries During World War II, Cordele served as an important shipping base on the lower Savannah River due to its location just south of Athens and its easy access to water gunships and submarines used by U.S Navy forces during World War II Today, cordelle has become known for its beautiful churches (such as St John's Episcopal Church), historical sites such as Colleton House and Fort Myer Park/Dahlonega Battlefield National Monument, open-air markets throughout the year (including one held every other Saturday), shopping opportunities including local artisanal businesses such as Beasley’s Artisan Creamery or Second Street Market near downtown Cordele; and excellent food options including several establishments owned by celebrity chefs like Bobby Flay or Diane Ackermann among others
Cordele is a town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,534 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Cordelle was James Wilkinson in 1802. The post office was established in 1814. A sawmill and grist mill were built here in 1851 by J.P. Morgan & Co., which became the largest manufacturer of flour and cornmeal in the area until it merged with Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company in 1907. In 1912, Cordele's only grocery store, the Oleander Store and Restaurant, burned down; however, a new grocery store opened soon after on Chestnut Street. In 1951–1952 renovation of the old courthouse began that included an addition to the building that housed a library and an auditorium as well as new public works infrastructure including water main installation and maintenance facilities for roads and streetlights. As part of this project $2 million was invested from local government sources including a 1-cent sales tax increase approved by voters that summer to pay for it all. In 1957 Cordele had its first movie theater when the First National Drive-in opened on Courthouse Road south of town near present day Interstate 85: it would be replaced by Regal Cinemas ten years later but remains standing as one of Cordelle's few remaining landmarks unchanged since then. In 1990s cordelle experienced some growth with development taking place along Court Road north of town which has led to increased traffic volume on Courthouse Road which has caused some problems for residents such as elevated potholes throughout much of 2018/2019
