The USS Constitution was brought in by the Cordele Merchants Association and donated to the city by Rear Admiral George Wright. The Constitution was originally built as a steamboat and served as a training ship for naval officers before being converted into a warship. These include the Navy SEALs, Marine Corps Unit 1st BattalionSTRONGARM, Naval Reserve Unit 2nd Battalion (Reserve) LITTLE ROCKS, and Naval Special Warfare Group 3-5th Mountain Division FALLS CHURCHILL WOODS KNOWN AS THE "GOLDEN GIRL" detachment from Fort Benning, Georgia. There are also numerous local businesses that sell navy items such as memorabilia, buttons, posters, and more. Some of these businesses have been around since before the military presence in town began. Others were started during or after World War II when sailors moved into town to find work on new warships or submarines. Still others were founded after Hurricane Katrina hit town in 2005 and destroyed many homes along with any ties to the military community present within town limits. After he became president, she served as a permanent homeport at Philadelphia until her decommissioning in 1865.
Cordele is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Cordele is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It was founded in 1871 by white settlers from South Carolina and Tennessee. The first post office in Cordele was established on February 10, 1872, and it remained open until November 15, 1890. The town of Cordele was chartered on December 21, 1871 by a group of white farmers from South Carolina and Tennessee who had come to northeastern Georgia to purchase land for themselves and their families. The first store in Cordele was built on what is now Main Street. In its early years, the town primarily grew crops but also developed manufacturing capabilities such as tanning hides and producing paper products such as newspapers and posters. In 1907, an agreement was made between the state of Georgia and several railroad companies that would provide transportation link between central Atlanta and both rural areas within Fulton County as well as points northward into Gwinnett County. This resulted in the founding of the Southern Railway Company which would soon become one of the most important carriers for goods throughout Southeast Alabama including parts of Savannah/Athens/Tullahoma County before eventually becoming a major transporter for cotton throughout much of Northeast Mississippi through Chattanooga before finally terminating its service in Decatur Heights near Decatur Lake in 1893. The growth of corduroy tires during World War I led to increased production by local industries including tannery production; however due to wartime rationing only a small percentage ever reached consumers outside the military or government forces garrisoned within southeastern Georgia proper while most materials consumed within those areas went into munitions production or war-related supplies rather than consumer goods Production stopped entirely following Victory over Germany with little economic impact on corduroy producers statewide however some men did find new opportunities working with plastics manufacturers some leading to establishment of two plants near Marietta just outside Athens after World War II
