From 1865-1969, the Third Regiment of Rhode Island National Guards served as an honor guard for Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Helen Lincoln. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson announced that all able-bodied men aged 20 years or older could become a part of the national guard if they were willing to sign a military service oath. The first women members of the national guard were inducted into service in 1917. The Third Regiment of Rhode Island National Guards became the first female regiment in the United States Army on October 14, 1918 when it joined forces with the army’s 1st Brigade Combat Team (Chinatown). On November 15th, 1918, female soldiers from both regiments participated in a parade through New York City as part of World War I Veterans Day ceremonies held at Madison Square Garden. Cordele is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,256 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Cordele was founded in 1824 as a small farming community and grew large enough to be incorporated as a city in 1888. Theodus (a Mormon missionary) arrived in 1828 and started the first grocery store in Cordele. In 1830, he founded what would become the only cotton gin in America. The town was named for General Aiken County Courthouse located on present-day Broad Street between Park Avenue and Main Street In 1884, Mayor John Pritchard suggested that Cordele name its new public library after President James K. Polk because of his role as Executive Director of the National Academy of Sciences during the 1880s. This idea caught on and by 1886, Cordele had its first library with an addition completed in 1893
