Cordele is a city in northern Georgia, United States. The population was 4,871 at the 2010 census. Cordele is located on the Flint River and is part of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. It has been called "The New Athens" because it replaced Athens as the capital of Tennessee in 1815, when that state was admitted to the Union as Alabama. The first permanent settler in what would become Cordele was James Fenton in 1812. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Flint River. In 1814, Fenton's daughter married George Dillard, who had come from Knoxville and owned some land along the river. Dillard donated land for a school and church in 1816 and named his new town Cordele after his father-in-law, who had also given him land for a home and store. The original village included only a few homes and consisted mostly of logs rafted downriver from nearby mountainsides. Cordele grew rapidly during this time, thanks to its location on the riverbanks and access to natural resources such as tobacco, cotton, cornmeal, coal (for heating) and waterpower (for irrigation). By 1830, cordeliers were making enough money to buy their own homes; by 1840 they had built over 100 structures within their limits alone. During this period there also began to be significant agricultural development in Cordele; farmers began growing peas (a crop not generally grown until after World War II), potatoes (later developed into tubers for canned goods), tomatoes (now popular among chefs around world), onions and other vegetables as well as lumber for building homes and businesses.. In 1847–48 General Wofford ran an unsuccessful campaign against Andrew Johnson for president on account of his support for slavery; many people associated with Cordele felt disappointed with Johnson because he did not seem interested in helping them get ahead economically or politically. This led to increased tensions between African Americans living within prominent white families throughout much ofoutherland during this time period – tension which would culminate into civil war two years later. During Reconstruction following reconstruction policies set by Ulysses S Grant & Abraham Lincoln which aimed to healing racial wounds caused by America's past injustices including slavery & segregationsthe city experienced rapid growth due largely to incoming freedmen working local farms while attending public schools provided free by federal programs like Aid To Families With Dependent Children & food stamps through various agencies like AFDC & SNAP
