Cordele is a town in Macon County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,585 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Cherokee word "korda" meaning "home." The post office has been in Cordele since 1892. The town was founded by Captain James Troup and Colonel John Hilliard on October 8, 1822 as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River between Augusta and Macon. In 1827, it became a county seat with the addition of land east of present-day Cordele from Coweta County. A courthouse and jail were built in 1829, followed by a schoolhouse in 1831. A Methodist Episcopal church was consecrated in 1840. A cotton gin was built in 1865; it processored cotton until 1978 when it stopped operations due to bad weather. In 1886, an electric line was extended to Cordele from Athens via Rome then Coweta and eventually Augusta; this helped start or continue many local businesses such as Coca Cola Bottling Company (1892), Furniture Mart (1910), Piggly Wiggly (1910), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport (1970s) and Home Depot (1996). Cordele is located at 33° 34′ 37″ N 88° 30′ 00″ W (); its elevation is 907 feet above mean sea level (). According to the 2010 census,66% of the population are white whereas 24% are black or African American . Out of total population 2%, 5% identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino . There have always been some people who have identified as Native American which makes up 1%.

The first settler in Cordele was John Wesley Minor who arrived in 1802. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street near what is now US-41 south of downtown Cordele. A few years later he married Jane Goodloe and they had six children: Sarah (1804–1892), John Wesley (1805–1875), Jameson (1807–1882), Edwin (1809–1900), Martha Jane (died young) and Pollyanna Methodist Episcopal Church). In 1835, Isaac Asbury purchased land atWHAT IS NOW Main Street and Old Plantation Road east of downtown for $4 per acre ($/acre).
