The town is named after General James Fenton Cordell, who served as a general in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Cordelle was originally part of Cobb County, but it was moved to Gwinnett County in 1905. The population of Cobb County has since increased to over 153,000 people while Gwinnett County’s population has only increased to over 25,000 people since 2000. The history of Cordele begins with its establishment as a small village on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. In 1894, Scots-Irish immigrants settled in what is now Cordele and began trading goods along the river for cattle and crops. By 1912, when Atlanta became an city, many of these settlers had moved away and their businesses had closed down. However, some continued to live in Cordele until they left for good around 1930 due to economic conditions in Georgia at that time. In 1935, when Atlanta was first incorporated as a city, Cordelle residents voted to move into their own city limits which would eventually become known as downtown Atlanta. The first mayor of downtown Atlanta was John Heisman who also served as chairperson for Housing Authority which created new development east of Interstate 85 between Ponce de Leon Street and First Street SW (now Chatham Street). This area became known as Southside Center which housed most of Atlantans government services including schools and hospitals before gradually moving out towards Ponce de Leon Street beginning in the early 1960s when interstate highways were completed connecting DowntownAtlanta with suburban areas north and south of I-85

In 1861, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line through Cordele and it became a town within the new Georgia state government. The population of Cordele decreased from 476 to 298 between 1870 and 1920.
