The first European to visit what would become Conyers was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1525. He named it after his friend Cardinal Francesco Carafa, who had been sent by Pope Clement VII to explore what lay between Spain and India at that time. In 1785–86, during the American Revolutionary War, General Andrew Johnson's army passed through Conyers on its way from Savannah to provide support for General Nathanael Greene's siege of Yorktown. In 1811–12 Commodore John Cook sailed through Conyers Harbor on his way from Tocantins Island to Acapulco with supplies for naval forces off Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. The town was laid out as a village called New Market in 1815 by Nicholas Bingham (1784–1868), one of the founders of Atlanta and one of its most significant early developers. A year later he donated land east of present-day Grady Street for use as a suburb; this became known as Auburn Hills (after him). In 1865 General William Tecumseh Sherman halted his march through central Georgia when he reached Marietta near Conyers; here he made an encampment before continuing his journey downriver via Athens and Milledgeville back to Chattanooga on July 9 that year – becoming famous as "The Marching Chief". In 1802, a group of white men led by General Nathan Bedford Forrest surveyed the area and named it "Fulton" after Sir George Carteret Tucker. In 1803, Englishman John Conyers purchased 5,000 acres (2 km²) of land from the Creek Nation for $10 per acre. On July 4th, 1812, General James Kenedy burned all the buildings in what is now downtown Conyers to prevent Native Americans from coming to trade with Europeans. Many people in and around Conyers lost their homes and businesses in this fire; many still live there today. The city's first school was built on North Main Street in 1814. The first courthouse was built in 1840 on Court Avenue NE near present-day Third Street NW. The city limits grew rapidly due to its location on high ground between two rivers - but as more people moved into the city boundaries, water supplies became an important issue which required annexation by other cities or towns. In 1861, cotton ginners began using steamboats to transport goods upriver from Mobile Bay to markets east of Atlanta; this new industry caused a decline in demand for cotton so much that prices collapsed and local mills closed their doors during the American Civil War because they could not compete with private enterprise.
