The first settler in Conyers was James Conyers who immigrated to what is now Conyers from England in 1824. He had five children and founded a small farming town named after himself, which he called "Conyers." In 1866, the legislature designated lands around Conyers as a county seat; however, no one moved to live there until after World War II when many refugees from Europe settled there. The post office serving Conyers opened in 1872 and soon became known for its excellent milk products. The economy changed with the opening of Interstate 95 and the decline of local agricultural production during the 1990s; however, manufacturing has recently returned to the area with new businesses such as Alcoa that have relocated to Conyers from other parts of Fulton County.
