Conyers is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 33,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Conyers Recreation Center and the Atlanta Falcons football team. The first permanent settler in what is now Conyers was James Conyers, who arrived on a slave ship in 1778. He owned about 150 slaves when he sold them to Capt. John McIntosh for $1/year in 1804. In 1825, James's son-in-law John Witherspoon bought land here from James for $5/acre. This area became known as "Witherspoon's Corners" because of this purchase. In 1830, conjoined twins named Betsey and Sarah Griggs bought property here from Witherspoon for $2/acre (equivalent to $). They raised pigs and chickens there until 1839 when they moved their operation to Marietta because of the bad climate in Georgia at that time. When they decided to sell their farmstead again, they found it worth more money to move back four miles (6 kilometers) to Conyers so that they could continue growing crops than it would have been six miles (10 kilometers) away! One of local businesses started by Betsey Griggs is still active today - she ran a general store called "Griggs' Store" which opened on May 1, 1872 with help from her sister Sarah Cooks Cook (1812-1892). Conyers is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area and was once one of the most racially diverse towns in America. Today, Conyers is a largely white community with some African American residents. The first permanent European settlers in Conyers were families from England who came overland to what is now Cobb County in 1814. They called themselves "Conyers family." In 1827, John Conyers purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of downtown Atlanta for $2 per acre. He named his home after himself and two brothers he had bought out of their father's estate: Edward Coneyer and James Fenton Conyers. The first school in Conyers was built on property donated by Mr. Coneyer in 1828-29 as an academy for black students only. From 1830 to 1840, blacks began to attend schools near downtownAtlanta as well as new public schools established around the city limits such as Trinity Methodist School and Peachtree Street Academy; these schools taught freedmen until state law prohibited them from doing so during the 1860s when literacy tests became required for all citizens aged 15 or older In 1865, John Lewis Drury founded Ebenezer Baptist Church which served both black and white people in Conyers until it closed its doors permanently due to integration policies implemented by local officials during desegregation efforts across Georgia between then and now The townspeople erected a large brick courthouse on Smith Road northeast of downtownConway on October 11th 1911 following a vote by the town council with Rev H Clayton serving as presiding officer Drury died suddenly less than two months later while preaching at Ebenezer Baptist Church north ofconway on December 8th 1911 leaving behind an unfinished church complex that would become known as Drury Park today
