The Conyers Air Force Base, located in Conyers, Georgia was founded on December 15, 1941. It was during World War II that the base became operational and it served as a strategic airbase for the United States military. The base has been open to the public since 1992 and it is currently home to the 145th Airlift Wing which is responsible for providinglift support for various USAF units stationed at Conyers AFB. Conyers is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 17,903 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Fulton County after Atlanta. The Courthouse Square is home to the Atlanta Federal Building and several other noteworthy buildings. The area that now includes Conyers was first settled by Europeans in the early 18th century. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Mobile to take part in the Battle of New Orleans and encountered Indian forces on what is now known as Military Road 4 miles (6 km) east of today's Conyers. After a day of battle, General Jackson ordered his men to build a stockade around their position and withdrew with their horses. This event helped give rise to the name "Conyers" which means "place where horses were kept." In 1868, an act was passed by Congress creating Fulton County including present-day Conyers as one of its five counties. The county courthouse and jail were built within years of each other on Courthouse Square in downtownConyers.
