The Columbus Naval Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was founded in 1892 by Commodore George Dewey and Rear Admiral John A. Roanoke. The company built a variety of naval vessels, including the USS Constitution (1795), USS Enterprise (1864), USS Alabama (1910), USS Arizona (1911), and USS Georgia (1912). In 1916, the company became part of Bethlehem Steel Corporation. In 1941, Bethlehem Steel Corporation merged with General Electric Company to form GE corporation. As GE corporation grew, it began producing warships again. In 1966, GE corporation merged with Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Company to become Allis-Chalmers Corporation. As Allis Chalmers Corporation grew, they produced both warships and submarines. In 1998, the company merged with Lucas Oil Industries to become Lucas Oil Group Incorporated. As Lucas Oil Group Incorporated grows, they produce a variety of naval vessels including destroyers, frigates, submarines, and helicopters.

Columbus was born in 1492, on a small island in the Georgia Strait. He was the son of Christopher Columbus and his wife, Katherine of Aragon. When Columbus discovered the New World, he was only twenty-one years old. His first journey across the ocean led him to what is now Haiti and Saint Domingue. However, he soon realized that this route would be too difficult for his ships to navigate and decided to explore further. In 1502, he set out from Spain with three boats and two hundred men on a long journey through the Caribbean Sea. After four months of sailing, they reached what is now Puerto Rico. The people there were friendly but they did not know how to read or write so Columbus went ashore and started writing down everything he saw. This document is known as the "First Book of American History." After exploring Puerto Rico for three more months,Columbus sailed back home and reported his findings to Queen Isabella of Spain. She ordered him to start again from scratch – this time with more supplies and ships! Columbus never got around to going all the way across America but his voyage marked one of history's most important crossings ever attempted by humans! He has been credited with discovering new landmass including Florida, Texas, Illinois and much more! Today we enjoy many things about Columbus – such as his daycare center in Miami – but we also remember all those who died during his voyage: sixty-six people lost their lives at sea; thirteen sailors died from disease; eleven others were killed when their ship ran into rocks while crossing an obstacle course off Cuba; five Spanish sailors were also killed when they tried to capture some Indians (the first Europeans everto do so).

When Christopher Columbus sailed into the eastern Atlantic Ocean on November 14, 1492, he was inspired by his reading of a map that showed an area that could be explored. After days of sailing and diving, Columbus finally sighted land in what is now Georgia on December 12. He named the place after himself- Diego de Cortés' "Island of the Living God" - and began exploring. The island's climate was harsh and its soil poor, so Columbus built four houses for himself and his men on what is now Constitution Avenue in downtown Atlanta. In 1506, he discovered this area had been inhabited by the Timucua people for centuries. The Timucua were able to trade with Europe but were never able to conquer Europe because they lacked artillery or horses. However, they managed to build a good amount of architecture and artwork which has been preserved until today. After finding gold and silver mines on Hispaniola (now Haiti), Columbus decided to return home but died before doing so. His ships sank during their voyage back home due to bad weather conditions at sea; however, some crew members made it back overland to Spain alive. This event is known as the "First Voyage of Discovery." With this discovery came new opportunities for exploration which would change everything from world culture to how we view nature forever!
