In the early 15th century, Columbus was a small village in present-day Georgia. The town was founded by Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer and cartographer, because he believed that the Indies were located in that area. When he discovered the Bahamas on October 14, 1492, he decided to move his exploration party northward and explore what lay beyond. He named the new land America after himself and set out from Verrazzano's village on November 12 of that year. The first Europeans to reach what is now Columbus, Georgia appeared in 1607 when Captain John Smith sailed up the Chattahoochee River and landed at Fort James on September 21st. However, no permanent European settlement was established until 1713 when Captain Nicholas Bache inherited a grant of 640 acres (24 km2) from Sir George Wright of Pensacola Bayou. After purchasing additional land grants over time, Bache's colony grew into what is now Columbus with a population of around 1,500 people in 1735. The first Englishman to live permanently in Georgia was Nicholas Evans who arrived at Savannah Harbor on December 26th of that year with his family from England. Evans became one of the earliest colonists in America and built Fort Moultrie near Savannah to keep watch over trade routes between Europe and Georgia as well as guard against Spanish ambitions for control over those areas. A total of 10 Africans were brought over as slaves by Commodore John Hawkins during his successful attempt to establish British control over East Florida during the reign of George II in 1763-64; however none ever worked or lived among American colonists here atColumbus proper but rather along Botkin's Creek where they were taken before being sold off to other plantation owners across South Carolina-North Carolina-Virginia throughout much of this period………..
