The history of coffee in Columbus, Georgia began with Dutch traders and farmers sailing down the Savannah River in search of new land to settle. In 1627, Nicholas Johannesen purchased 20 acres of land southwest of the city and named it "Raleigh Plantation." The first coffee beans were roasted here in 1643 by Nicholas' son John. Raleigh Coffee Roasters is still a family-owned business today. In 1837, George Peabody founded Peabody & Company in New York City as a Merchants Exchange Coffee House. He imported Arabica coffee from Java and roamed throughout the Northeast buying and selling beans from small growers. When he moved west to California in 1849, he brought his enthusiasm for coffee to Columbus where he opened the first retail store in what is now downtown Columbus. At Peabody's store, customers could purchase whole beans or ground coffee for sale directly to consumers or share their finds with friends at social events such as cocktail parties or balls. In 1907, Peabody donated all his assets including his store and warehouse to Ohio State University for use as a research library). Today, Ohio State University operates thePeabody Museum which houses artifacts from both Peabody's retail stores and research laboratories along with larger collections of world literature on coffee culture.
