It was not until 1872 that the Coast Guard became an independent agency within the United States Department of Homeland Security. The discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus on October 14, 1492 has forever changed the course of American history. The story of Columbus and his crew is one that is often told in children's stories and school textbooks. However, much more complex and interesting aspects to this story are not typically revealed until recently. For example, it has been known since at least the 16th century that Columbus never set foot on America - he actually sailed all the way from Spain to India in search of a new route to Asia. Furthermore, there were other claimants to the land east of Mexico before Columbus even made contact with anyone in what is now America- including Juan Ponce de León, who claimed Florida in 1502. In 1513, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered Tampa Bay which led to many false accusations and lawsuits between Spain and Portugal over control of this area. Finally, after years of searching, Columbus finally landed at San Salvador Island off present day Jacksonville Beach on December 12th,, 1492 - less than two months after his original plans had called for him to reach India first! This event helped solidify Spanish claims over most of what is now America- an event that would later be referred to as The Conquest Of America! Columbus' trip was not without its challenges either- his group only managed to bring back a fraction of what they thought they were going find when they arrived on shore (or so they thought). Additionally, due to bad weather conditions and hostile Native Americans he faced several times along the way home (the first time being when he lost all his men while tryingTo cross a river using boats), As such, Columbus' legacy will always be associated with risk takers and adventurers alike. Nonetheless, despite these setbacks, his voyages provided invaluable information about North America which was eventually used by Europeans in orderto build trade routes hitherto unknown- something that has continued into our own day. Even today some portions of North America remain largely unexplored because no European exploration took place here during those specific times! In fact,- during the early 21st century)- Ulysses S Grant once said "America wasn't discovered until recent times by people like us." Therefore,- although there have been numerous explorers throughout history who have attempted crossings into new lands- none have had quite as large or impactful an effect as Christopher Columbuss actual journey did upon American history
