The national guard was first organized in College Park, Georgia on February 15, 1861. The college had been closed for two years and the university’s president, Judah P. Benjamin, decided to arm and trains the local militia to protect the school. The first National Guard detachment was made up of twenty-four men and they were quartered at a hotel near the University. On March 1, 1861, Benjamin ordered all male students in College Park to assemble at the City Hall at 5 p.m. for drill purposes only; no weapons would be allowed on campus. On March 3, 1861, Captain John Sowers of Company A of the Georgia Guards proposed that each student sign a pledge to support the Confederate States of America before being inducted into the regiment. In total there were over one thousand students from College Park who pledged their allegiance to South Carolina when it became clear that Georgia would not secede from the Union. When Confederate forces marched into town on April 12th (three days after Fort Sumter), many young men from College Park joined Confederate soldiers as part of what is known as “the raid” or “the college Invasion” which occurred throughout state colleges and universities across North Carolina and Virginia during April 1861. Many young men fromCollege Park served with distinction in both armies during this time including Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest's brigade which fought at Bull Run Bridge against an numerically superior Union force under General Robert Ewell; Colonel James Baldwin's Battalion 2nd Regiment Georgia Infantry fighting against Pickett's Brigade at Gettysburg; Lieutenant Colonel John Blythe's battalion 2nd Regiment Alabama Infantry fighting at First Manassas Junction against Robert Ewell’s division led by General Joseph Hooker; Lieutenant Colonel George Harnett's battalion 2nd Regiment South Carolina Infantry fighting under Hood at Appomattox Court House; Corporal Augustus Walthall's company A battery 1st Tennessee Light Artillery batteries defending Athens between May 21st - 23rd 1864 while his unit was engaged in concert with Battery D Yankee gunboat off Petersburg harbor HMS Vanguard HMS Olympia HMS Ariel USS Constitution USS Monitor USS Tripoli

The College Park, Georgia National Guard was founded in 1967. The unit is made up of both male and female members. It has a variety of tasks that include guarding the nation's borders, providing security for military installations, and helping to keep the public safe.
College Park is a city located in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,903 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to most of the University of Georgia's enrollments and research facilities. The city was founded in 1837 by Dr. James Buchanan Macon as a small town on the edge of what is now College Park. In 1876, when Atlanta became a city, College Park was annexed into Atlanta and lost its status as a separate town. Today, it is one of the largest cities in Fulton County with over 17,000 residents. One ofCollege Park's earliest occupants was Dr. John Calkins who established an apothecary business in 1838 before moving to Athens to open his own medical clinic two years later. Soon other entrepreneurs followed suit and By 1850 there were more than 20 businesses operating within College Park boundaries alone! During Reconstruction period (1868-1877), many students came to study at local colleges including Emory & Henry (now Emory University) which reopened its doors after being closed for several years due to lack of funding. AfterAtlanta’s incorporation as a municipality in 1878, CollegePark lost some of its autonomy but still had schools such as Presbyterian Theological Seminary and Mercer Theological Seminary which functioned independently until they merged into Emory University in 1912! During this time also many jobs opportunities opened up for graduates from local colleges such as hotel management or construction! When Atlanta entered World War I (1914-1918), many college graduates enlisted or served in the military providing plenty of employment during that difficult time for our cityscape! As Atlanta grew larger and more diverse over these years, so too did its universities with Regent’s School becoming Gwinnett Technical Institute (later renamed Southern Polytechnic Institute) while Morehouse Hospital became Howard University; all three institutions remain active today with various programs leading to professional degrees today! Some famous alumni include Mayor Andrew Youngblood who attended Morehouse while he served as Georgia Governor from 1974-1978; musician Otis Redding who attended Regent’s School where he learned early gospel music techniques; actor/director Sidney Poitier who graduated fromMorehouse Hospital;; basketball Hall OF Famer Julius Erving who attended Regent’s School where he played under coach Rick Majerus…………….to name just a few examples!!! The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1776. The first units were raised in New York City on November 5, 1776. The State of Rhode Island organized its own National Guard on January 1, 1779. The first unit to be called the Rhode Island Regiment was mustered into service on October 14, 1779. On December 12, 1780, George Washington ordered that all states with militias should raise their own units and arm them for war against Great Britain. In 1802, the U.S. Congress authorized the arming and training of national guard troops for military campaigns in Mexico and Louisiana by President James K Polk as part of Manifest Destiny doctrine to expand American influence in the Western Hemisphere. In 1898 during the Spanish-American War, General Antonio Meade ordered 4500 men from Florida’s Coast Guard Militia to join Army troops stationed at Fort Brooke near Tampa Bay to prevent any peacekeepers from crossing into Cuba without orders from Havana leadership. After Spanish forces entered Cuban waters and bombarded Fort Brooke using cannons and torpedo boats on April 15th 1898, American forces destroyed over 100 Spanish warships off Tampa Bay before withdrawing to Santiago de Cuba under cover of night without firing a shot or capturing any sailors or weapons aboard those ships which would have incriminated America in any hostilities with Spain that may have ensued had they captured such equipment as artillery pieces or torpedoes despite having been expressly forbidden by law enforcement officials ashore who had warned Meade about potential problems should such an event occur given that belligerents had threatened US citizens living within range if they did not comply with this warning). During World War II many members of both state militias (National Guards) and regular army units serve in various theaters including Europe where combat is often brutal but also dangerous because major combatants are usually armored vehicles carrying high caliber weapons while civilians are targets easy prey for snipers or fighter pilots flying low over enemy territory
The National Guard was first activated on September 16, 1790 as a militia to support the George Washington administration in its ongoing war with France. The National Guard has since grown into one of the most powerful and important organizations in America. Today, the National Guard provides law enforcement and security services across the United States via units stationed at state capitols and major military installations. As a result, the National Guard has become an essential part of American society and culture.
In 1867, College Park was founded as a small agricultural college by Georgia Governor John M. Palmer. The school became an accredited institution in 1889 and offered degrees in agriculture, veterinary medicine, law, and theology. The school relocated to its current location on the campus of Georgia State University in 1912. In 1923, the School of Veterinary Medicine was merged with the School of Agriculture to form the present day Georgia State University Veterinary Medical Center. In 1960, the School of Law was merged with the School of Continuing Studies to form the present day Georgia State University College of Law. In 1971, College Park became an affiliate member of the Association for American Universities and has since been one of its most respected members. TheCollegePark Campus spans over 6 acres (2 hectares) and comprises more than 120 buildings including three colleges: Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Colleges of Veterinary Medicine; and Schools of Business Administration/Commerce/Law/Engineering/Science/Technology/. The main building is called “The President’s Palace” which served as home to Presidents from 1928 until it burned down in 2001. Other notable buildings on campus include: “The Old House” which is a historic mansion that used to serve as headquarters for both Schools of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine; “The David Denton House” which houses many faculty offices; “Campus Hall” which is home to many common areas such as classrooms, Meeting Rooms, Library & Archives…the list goes on! There are also several field sites scattered around campus including several golf courses as well as baseball diamonds, tennis courts and other athletic facilities- making it one big paradise for students!
In 1837, College Park was established as a year- round college. In 1861, the University of Georgia opened its doors to students and soon became one of the leading universities in the Southeast. In 1892, the University of Georgia changed its name to Georgia State University and moved from College Park to downtown Atlanta. Today,Georgia State University is one of the state's largest comprehensive university systems with undergraduate and graduate programs in over 50 disciplines.
