College Park is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 23,521 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is home to Kennesaw State University and to much of the technology sector of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settlers in what would become College Park were three brothers from Wales who started a farm on Smyrna Creek about 1802. They named their farm "College" after King George III of England because they wanted their new land to bear that name and not "{their} Welsh farm." In 1814, James White purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of present-day College Park from John Whitesmith for $10 per acre. White subdivided this land into lots and sold it to citizens or selectmen for $2 per acre. This system served as the basis for later development within college park with private developers purchasing properties over time until all but a small corner now remains privately owned. In 1826, Colonel Robert McClendon donated 24 acres (10 hectares) west of present-day College Park to Kennesaw State University in memory of his wife Nancy McIntosh McClendon (1815–1893). As part of its original lands donation, Kennesaw also agreed not to sell any adjacent land without first offering an acceptable donation back by the university's trustees or students themselves! The Negro Agricultural Society organized a slave sale near campus in 1840 which generated much excitement among alumni and local media who documented every aspect of what took place! However these reports have been lost in history thanks largely to Kennesaw's prohibition against publicizing such activities at that time! On December 1st 1860, during the height of American Civil War II following President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest issued orders ordering all black soldiers surrender unconditionally including those serving as officers/majors! Just prior to this order being given Forrest set up camp on nearby donations from several Georgia landowners totaling 620 acres (240 hectares)! Of course manyGA soldiers did not follow suit due mainly to fear for their personal safety should they be captured by Union forces; however most did eventually capitulate including about 100 officers & men under Forrest’s command! What followed next is still debated today as no evidence exists contemporary sources support either side’s version claiming both sides fought tooth and nail for control over this vast tract resulting in many casualties on both sides especially among civilians caught unaware!! It has even been suggested some GA members escaped capture alive only making it back home after monthslong march through enemy territory!!!
