College Park was founded in 1836 by a group of Baptist ministers and educators as the Collegiate Association School. The school closed in 1845, but reopened in 1861 as the Georgia Institute of Technology. In 1865, it became an all-male institution, and women began attending the school in 1893. The school was renamed Georgia State University in 1912 following the statehood of Georgia. It became a public university with responsibility for education and research within itsAnthracite Ridge campus until it merged with Emory University on February 1, 1997. The history of College Park is intertwined with that of Atlanta, one of America's most important cities during the antebellum period. The current site of College Park was part of what were then two northeast Atlanta neighborhoods: Druid Hills and Midtown. Druid Hills was established about 1800 as a plantation community run by wealthy Englishmen who employed African slaves to cultivate their land. By 1830, however, this had become an upscale black neighborhood exclusive to white families; Midtown emerged circa 1830 as one of Atlanta's first working-class communities composed principally of enslaved Africans who had been bought or leased from local landowners. By 1840, these areas lay adjacent to each other on Magazine Street between Peachtree Road and Pulteney Street NW; they would form the nucleus for what would become College Park when it opened its doors to students in 1861. Druid Hills' aristocratic owners soon withdrew their support for slavery while Midtown began becoming more commercialized; indeed, many Atlantans viewed Druid Hills and Midtown as models for suburban development aroundAtlanta proper which they desired themselves. This progressivism among some Atlantans may have been motivated at least partially by concerns over whether slaveowners could continue to maintain power over their own people afteratlanta was admitted into the Union under President James Kellar Polk on November 14,1849—a day after Montgomery County voted overwhelmingly to secede from Alabama—and gain control over education within their own borders (Larson 2003). Accordingly, representatives from both Druid Hills and Midtown met together on October 9th and 10th1851to discuss methods for establishing an educational institutions within Fulton County (Fulton County Courthouse Petition #4). Unfortunately for those aims—the meeting never took place because county officials deemed it too high profile—the discussions did lead to establishment of two higher learning institutions: Atlanta Medical School (later Grady Memorial Hospital) on May 6th1853by Drs John Cilley & Dr Samuel Griggs MD;[1]and John Fenton’s Institute Of Technology (laterGeorgia Instituteof Technology) on October 25th1859 by Ebenezer Eaton,[2] latterly known as Emory University (initially simply “Emory”). It should be noted that not all faculty at either institution were Georgian Baptists like those behind founding Collegettaian Association Schools such as Tech High School today– facilities such as Emory’s Business Administration Building date back to 1907! And while Tech has ben catered towards Blacks since its inception (!), Collegettaian Association Schools generally served Whites until recent times.[3] However despite this diversity among early instructors at Tech High School there are also several notable alumni who went onto distinguished careers including former governor Sonny Bono[4], Repuben Evers[5], world champion wrestler Jesse Owens[6], UGA football coach Norm Chowdhury[7], CEO Akamai Technologies Inc.[8], Mayor Kasim Reed [9],[10],[11],[12],[13],[14],[15],[16]), future Governor Nathan Deal [17][18][19], Representative Stacey Abrams [20][21][22]), business magnate Aubrey Imbruglia [23]; author Lillian Hellman)[24]; basketball Coach Rick Majerus[25]; actor David Oyelowo).[26]; singer Daphne Robinson Hodges[27].
In 1881, College Park was founded as a Presbyterian educational institution. In 1906, it became Georgia's first state university. In 1912, the university merged with the Atlanta University System and in 1945 it became the new Georgia State College.
