The College Park community is located in northwest Atlanta,770 miles north of the original home of the city. The area now known as College Park was first settled by English colonists in 1785 and named for King George III's college, Oxford University. In 1837, the Georgia General Assembly voted to establish a state university here and Act 5 of that year created the Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT). GIT opened its doors to students on October 1,1839. In 1889, GIT acquired land east of downtown Atlanta for a new campus. The area now known as Druid Hills was purchased from a group of landowners who had objected to GIT's plans for development. Construction started on what would become one of GAIA's most famous campuses – Druid Hills Drive – in 1890. Today, Druid Hills remains an important part of Gaithersburg Campus life and is home to many athletic teams including football and soccer programs as well as several other colleges and universities which have leased or shares space with GAIA. During World War II, elements from both American military forces stationed at nearby Decatur Army Air Field (now DeKalb County Airport) and British Commonwealth troops stationed at nearby Duluth Army Air Field teamed up in order to help produce crucial munitions needed for Operation Overlord - the Allied invasion of Normandy - starting on June 6th 1944. While much has been written about this pivotal battle during WWII, little has been said about how College Park residents helped contribute materially to this conflict through their acts of volunteering or providing goods and services essential to war effort like cooking gas masks or steel helmets. Today’s Gaithersburg Campus includes four schools: Arts & Sciences; Business Administration/Commerce; Engineering/Technology;and Health Sciences-Dentistry/Pathology/Ophthalmology-Schools total enrollment exceeds 507 undergraduate students plus nearly 100 graduate students from across 27 states representing more than 20 countries! And these numbers are only a taste...the number 2 school (Engineering/Technology) will open their doors Fall 2019 with over 200 undergraduate students! What began as just two schools on our campus expanded rapidly due not only to our amazing faculty but also our incredible student body! We truly are “One Campus at Home”?
The area now known as College Park was part of the Cherokee Nation before it became Georgia in 1802. The first white settler in what is now College Park was James Robertson, who arrived in 1794. In 1829, a group of Baptist missionaries founded the First Baptist Church in College Park. The church served as a base for their work among the Creek Indian tribe and also attracted settlers to the area. In 1839, an act of the Georgia General Assembly designated College Park as the site of Atlanta's first municipal government. In 1849, construction began on what is now Peachtree Street and Fourth Street to provide public transportation between downtown Atlanta and Midtown. This street was renamed Howard Street after Major General Alfred Vail, who donated land for the project. In 1870, City Hall was moved from its original location at Second and Fairbanks Streets to its current location at Eighth and Constitution Streets—a move that helped make University Avenue one of Atlanta's most important avenues. In 1892, whenAtlanta completed its annexation by Georgia of all of present-day Alabama, parts of what are now Northside and Southside were included within city limits. For a time these areas were known as "the Black Belt". As Atlantans expanded into this new territory they brought with them their African American slaves who had been owned by their southern counterparts since before Reconstruction had ended in 1865. Many black Atlantans found themselves living adjacent to white neighborhoods which they did not have access to education or jobs opportunities so they quickly assimilated into white society through various means such as crime rates increased significantly due to this disparity; however some black Atlantans managed to maintain some degree of separateness until after World War II when integration finally occurred throughout much suburban Atlanta
