Chamblee was founded in 1819 by John Chamblee and his wife, Martha. The original town was located on the Chattahoochee River, about 20 miles northeast of Atlanta. In 1838, Chamblee purchased land east of the river and built a new town on it. The name of the new town was changed to Chamblee in honor of Chamblee's father-in-law, General James Wilkinson. In 1850, Chamblee became a republic and voted to secede from Georgia. On July 1,1851, the United States Congress passed legislation annexing Chamblee into Alabama as part of that state's governmental structure. The population of Chamblee peaked at around 10,000 in 1880 but declined gradually until it reached its current level of about 400 in 1970. Despite its decline since the late 1800s, however,chamBLEE is still an important community in Georgia history because it has been home to many notable people including: Congressman Crispus Attucks (1796-1881), business magnate Ebenezer Cobb (1847-1925), actor/director Alfred Hitchcock (39th Governor of Georgia 1927-29), singer Dionne Warwick (born Dame Dee Dee Warwick) and author/illustrator Claude McKay (1914-1996).
Chamblee was founded in 1819 by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his friend and business partner, James Fenton. The town was named after General Forrest's Creek, which flows through the area. Chamblee became a slave-owning community and was important in the early development of Atlanta. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Chamblee was destroyed by Union forces during the Battle of Chattahoochee.
