Chamblee is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Chamblee is named after General James H. Chamblee who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Representative from Georgia from 1793 to 1801 and from 1802 to 1805. The community of Chamblee was settled by Germans in the early 1800s and first appeared on maps in 1807. By 1830, it had grown to include all of what is now Fulton County except for an small strip along the Chattahoochee River that fell within Cobb County until 1901 when it became part of Chamblee Township. In 1857, developers built a cotton gin and mill on the east side of town which soon became one of the most important economic engines driving growth in Chamblee over time. The cotton gin produced more than $2 million worth of goods per year during its heyday and helped drive local businesses such as J B Dunlop & Sons Shoes (now Dunlop) into serious competition with larger companies elsewhere in Georgia and South Alabama. In 1907, following passage of the Sherman Antitrust Act,chambleee businessman Wm Fenton took legal action against five other textile manufacturers Operating under similar business practices including those owned by John Ladd & Bros., Stephenson Brothers & Co., Eckerhart Bros., McKnight Brothers Incorporated, [and] Ayer Company for engaging in unfair competition with his own company by selling their products at below cost price without receiving any fair consideration from these defendants-a practice known as "cotton piracy". After four years' litigation, Fenton emerged victorious and successfully obtained injunctions ordering these defendants to cease their activities within two months or face suit themselves; this injunction order has been referred to as "the golden rule" because it remains active today and has never been violated since it was handed down).
