Cedartown was founded in 1824 by Major James H. Robertson and his wife, Sarah. The first store was on the corner of Washington and Franklin streets. In 1829, the town had three businesses - a cooper, a tailor, and a millinery - and it grew rapidly. In 1838, Cedartown had six businesses - a grocery store, twoivery stable, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, and post office. It also had one hundred residents. The first railroad arrived in Cedartown in 1840; it ran from Athens to Decatur. By 1850, the population of Cedartown had grown to over 1,000 people. The first courthouse was built in 1851; it replaced an earlier structure that burned down two years earlier. In 1861-1862, Confederate forces burned all but one of Cedartown's buildings during the Battle of Gettysburg; nearby Decatur was not hit as hard as other parts of Georgia because Union troops were deployed closer to Atlanta.
Cedartown is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Cedartown Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It includes three contributing buildings: the lifelong home of Judge James Fenton and his wife Sarah (née Caldwell) Fenton, now used as a museum; the old courthouse; and a small cemetery with about thirty graves. The first settlers in what is now Cedartown were Confederate soldiers who left from Mobile Alabama on October 15, 1861 to join General Nathan Bedford Forrest's force fighting for Southern independence. They arrived at what is now Milledgeville on December 21st and named their new settlement for Major General Robert Ewell Booth's brigade leader during the Battle of First Bull Run Creek Bridge (October 14-17, 1862). As news spread of Confederate successes near Chattanooga, Tennessee they deserted their unit and began to move towards that city. By 1871 only one store still remained in Cedartown – government store No. 1 which had been built by Colonel Jno Boulware around 1837 when he became commandant of the Cobb county jail. A post office was established here on November 24th, 1872 under name "Gadsden". In 1896 Cadartown had 5 churches - Methodist Episcopal ( church #1), Baptist ( church #2), Presbyterian ( church #3), Lutheran ( church #4) and Congregationalist/Presbyterian Unity Chapel (#5). All but one have since been demolished or converted into apartments or condos though some remains standing as a historic building next to I-75W exit 22A in today’s Cedartown Township In 1916 there were 4 businesses within walking distance of each other including 2 banks & grocery stores & telcos which are still extant today along with 3 residences: Mrs Smith’s home until 1978 (& her daughter’s current home), Mr Smith’s house from 1951 until 1978 (& his son’s current home) & Dr Hargrave’s house from 1906 until 1986 (& it currently serves as office space for local government). There also was an ice cream parlor called The Creamery opened by Mrs Sayers in 1916 adjacent to where Mrs Smith lives today just north of I-75W exit 22A off SR 912A

The town quickly became an important transportation center during the antebellum period because it had access to both railroads and boats.
