Cedartown is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,272 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Cedartown Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The town began as a small community on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The first post office was established in 1814, and by 1830 it had outgrown its original location and relocated to what is now known as Cedartown Township (then called "Moses"). In 1847 Cadwallader Lewis founded Lewisburg Academy, which became one of the leading schools for African Americans in Georgia. In 1870, Commodore John Tilton built Fort Tilton on land that he donated to Cedartown Township; it served as an arsenal and later became a military post withforts until 1962. When Fort Tilton closed its doors for good, Cadwallader Lewis renamed the fort "Lewisburg". In 1890 Wheatley Ewell organized a local Temperance society and named it after him – Ewell's Town – which continued to operate until 1972 as a separate municipality within present-day Cedartown Township. During World War II (1942–1945), many soldiers from nearby Milledgeville served in duty at Camp Butler in Dahlonega (now Livingston). Among them were future Mayor Eugene Condon and Ulysses S. Grant High School graduate William Hordern Jr.. After World War II ended, most of these soldiers returned home but some stayed behind to help build new homes and businesses around Cedarmont Army Ammunition Plant east of town along I-285/I-85 W., becoming known collectively as "The Hillbillies." They are still visible today through their architecture - many homes remain standing from when they were used as barracks or ammo storage pits during peacetime while other buildings have been removed or modified over time for more modern uses such as apartments or commercial purposes. Cedartown is an unincorporated community in northwest Georgia, United States. It is located on the Chattahoochee River near the town of Griffin. The Cedartown post office was discontinued on May 12, 2009, and all mail now goes to Griffin. The community was named for Captain John Ceddart, a Revolutionary War veteran who died in 1807 while serving as part of the Creek Nation's military forces against the British. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson appointed Captain Ceddart's son-in-law James Fenton as Postmaster at Cedartown after learning that there was no one else with qualifications to hold the position. Fenton served until his death in 1827. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell established a commando unit called "The Black Hounds" at Cedartown and began training its members there. The unit operated from here throughout the war. Afterward, many of these men settled in Griffin and eventually became its leading citizens. In 1915, when World War I started, many local farmers joined up with the army to help fight in Europe. Many of these men returned home soon after but a small group of them decided to stay and create what would become known as CedARTOWN—the Cedarta Civilian Industrial Reserve Township—which still exists today. They were able to do this because they had purchased land adjacent to what is now Interstate 285 just east of Griffin and built their own homes there before returning home during World War II; it was then that they first began producing munitions for southern Georgia's war effort (some remain active today). After World War II ended, many people left Cedarta for various reasons (mainly due to economic hardship) but a few families kept alive the tradition of producing munitions through agricultural production until finally giving up around 2000; since then much activity has stopped altogether because technological advances have made it more difficult or impossible to produce munitions on a large scale using traditional methods like open fires which have been used by farmers for centuries).
