The Cedartown Army Reserve, or ARMY in short, has been a part of the community since 1892. The town was founded by General James H. Wilson and his men as an encampment on the Chattahoochee River. By 1916, the ARMY had moved to its present location on State Street in downtown Cedartown. In World War II, the town was one of six communities located within a radius of Atlanta that were activated for military purposes. Today, the ARMY is composed of over 4,000 soldiers and sailors who serve in both local and federal units around Georgia. The town’s depot is home to two battalions of artillery Regiment 3rd Marine Division (1st Battalion) which along with other units provide fire support for local law enforcement efforts during riots or peace demonstrations.
