By 1870, Cartersville had become an important agricultural center, with many of its residents farming land near the river or using irrigation systems to produce crops year-round. In addition to its agricultural pursuits, Cartersville also became known for its manufacturing capabilities. In 1894, the Carter family sold their business interests in Cartersville to J.P. Morgan & Company for $1 million dollars. From then on, Cartersville became one of Morgan's primary investment areas. Cartersville, Georgia is a small city in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 2,716 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Newton County and part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1814 by General Robert Ewell during the Mexican–American War as a military base for Confederate forces fighting against Mexico. In 1848, Cartersville became the capital of Newton County when Athens, Georgia seceded from Georgia and became an independent state. The first courthouse in Cartersville was built on Court Street in 1849, and it served as the county seat until1875 when Athens replaced that position with its new government building on State Road 1A (now Peachtree Street). In 1892, Cartersville established itself as an educational center by becoming one of only two towns in America to receive a Carnegie gift totaling $5,000 for construction of a high school and library. That same year also saw the incorporation of Newton County's agricultural sector into what would become known as Cartersville's " prospering community". Over time however, this economic focus slowly began to fade while other nearby municipalities grew more prominent within their respective counties - eventually leading to Cartersville's eventual decline into obscurity over time. In recent years though, efforts have been made to revive interest in Cartersville through various initiatives such as its role as host to several annual events including Peach Blossom Festival and Ford Festivals; its current designation as a National Historic Landmark for its significance within American culture; and most recently, its initiation into being designated a " Community LifeCity" by Mayor Greg Stanton pursuant to his mayor-council proclamation issued on February 21st, 2017 which recognized both aspects of CartersVILLE'S unique character."
Cartersville was founded in 1821 by Sir John Carters, a British military officer. The town was named for him and his wife, Lady Sarah Carters. The first post office was established in 1824. In 1830, the town became part of the newly formed Cobb County. The First Baptist Church was built in 1837 and is still in use today. A cotton gin was built in 1840 and is still used today. The first school was founded in 1847 and is now known as Cartersville Middle School. In 1861, the Confederate States of America surrendered at Appomattox Court House and Carrersville residents took up arms to fight for the Confederacy. The town remained loyal to the South until after the war ended in 1865. After the war, Carrersville experienced some growth with new businesses being opened including a grocery store, brewery, bank and sawmill. However, these operations were later discontinued due to economic conditions during the Great Depression. In 1984, Carrersville become a city when it amalgamated with nearby Decatur
