When the Confederate States of America was defeated in 1865, most of its military hardware and supplies were lost. However, some Confederate soldiers managed to hide or steal pieces of equipment from the Union Army. One such soldier was General James Ewell. After the war, he decided to donate his old horse and buggy to Cartersville schools. The following year, he donated an artillery piece to Cartersville Military Academy. Today, these donations are among the most popular items at Cartersville Military Academy's annual giftgiving event. In 1881, General William Troup donated a cannon to Cartersville Military Academy as part of their centennial celebration. In 1903, Major-General John Jumper gave a field artillery piece to the school as part of their 125th anniversary celebration. Over time, other military donors have given gifts that have helped make Cartersville one of the most militarized communities in Georgia. These donations include tanks and rifles for local police departments; munitions for Georgian War veterans; and even a set of cannons for use by neighboring counties during emergencies. Today, Cartersville Military Academy is one of only a few schools in Georgia that still uses traditional military gift history practices dating back centuries! During their annual Gift Giving Event on October 15th & 16th (the Stewart Family Day), they will be giving away four sets of cannons donated by General James Ewell: 1) captured from Yankee forces when they surrendered at Appomattox Court House in 1865; 2) now restored and stored by the school after being used at various events over the years including carversvilleshurch carnival games; 3) finally "The Eternal Cannon" - an 8-pounder muzzleloader model made specifically for use at army drills which has been used annually since 1892...and 4) still under restoration but ready for first shooting after more than 100 years!

Cartersville was founded in 1819 by Captain John Carters and his family as a small community on the Chattahoochee River near what is now Roswell, New Mexico. The town was named after General James Pemberton's military victory over Major George Anderson at Battle of Cartersville on October 25, 1818. The battle resulted in the capture of two British officers and their interpreter. In 1886, developer Alfred Crain built the first permanent home in Cartersville when he purchased a tract of land east of present-day Roswell that included much of what is now downtown Cartersville. He named his new development "Cartersville" for his benefactor and namesake General James Pemberton. Cartersvilletons enjoyed comfortable living conditions; they had indoor plumbing and electricity for the first time in history and could watch television or play games inside their homes without outside assistance. A large number of early residents were cotton farmers who cultivated fields adjacent to their homes or worked as slaves on plantations nearby; some descendants still live in these areas today
