The coast guard gift history in Cartersville, Georgia began with the establishment of the Coast Guard Station in 1914. The station was used to provide security for the local fishing and shipping communities. In 1939, the Coast Guard Headquarters was relocated to Cartersville and the Station became known as Headquarters and Commanding Officer’s House. In 1951, Headquarters and Commanding Officer’s House were replaced by a new station building which served as both Headquarters and Service Station for the Coast Guard until 1972 when it was replaced by Headquarters again. In 1984, Services Department moved from Service Station to new Administration Building on US-1 near present day State Route 411. This location provided more space for the Services Department which functioned as an afloat office providing administrative support to all law enforcement agencies along the Gulf of Mexico shoreline. As time passed, additional functions were added to Headquarters including commandant position from 1974-1978; commandant position from 1980-1982; Commander District Two (1991-1994) and Commander District Three (1995-1999). On July 1st, 2001,Commandant post was eliminated effective September 1st due to budget cuts within Cartersville City government however duties remain currently vested with Deputy Commandants who report directly to Mayor Dixon. Headquarters is open 9am - 5pm Monday through Friday excluding holidays

In 1916, the Coast Guard Station moved to its current location on the opposite side of town from the old station. Cartersville is a small town located in north Georgia. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke County, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Scotsmen in 1810 as a ferry landing on the Chattahoochee River. The name change to Cartersville after General James A. Carters became Commandant of Georgia Military District in 1827. The first post office opened in 1828 and continued operation until it closed in 1892. In 1853, the town incorporated and began to grow with the arrival of a railroad link from Athens to Decatur. The population grew rapidly during this time and by 1870, Cartersville had reached its peak with a total population of 14,000 people living in 229 homes. However, due to concerns about water resources and other issues, the growth slowed dramatically during the next few decades as families moved away for more congenial environments or when new technologies made transportation more accessible or affordable within reach. By 1990, however, Cartersville had regained some of its former growth with a population of 7,812 people living in 514 homes (93% rural). Today, Cartersville continues to be an active community that values family values and community service while experiencing rapid growth throughout the years thanks to its many businesses and cultural attractions which include two high schools (physical education), three churches (Anglican/ Methodist/ Presbyterian), two libraries (one public and one private), five restaurants/cafes/bars/stores/, four golf courses (two professional) and seven museums including one theme park that features rides related to Appalachia such as "The Great Smoky Mountains" attraction which cost $30 million dollars alone!
The Coast Guard has a rich history of gift giving. From the humble seashell to the more luxurious items like Rolex watches, the Coast Guard has been known for its generosity. Some of the earliest gifts from members of the Coast Guard came in 1939 when officers and men from New York City donated baskets filled with fruit and cookies to be given to troops stationed at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The following year, officers and men from Rhode Island donated two lighted lanterns as Christmas presents to local military families. In 1951, a group of Coast Guardsmen from Maine sent a trunk filled with clothing, shoes and other items worth $1,000 to Puerto Rico as part of hurricane relief efforts. Two years later, a team of soldiers from California sent a trunk containing clothes, books and other supplies valued at $2,500 to help rebuild San Juan de la Cruz after Hurricane Ines ravaged the island. In 1957, members of the Coast Guard contributed money for an expansion project on Governors Island that would eventually include a chapel and storage area for boats. A year later, donations were again received when sailors from Maine sent objects such as radios and butter knives in memory of fallen comrades during Operation Neptune’s Spear. One such donation was made in 1978 when members of the Texas coast guard connected with their counterparts in New York City through satellite phonehookup in order to exchange gifts for support during Hurricane Rita. That same year also saw the first ever gift exchange between agencies when officials from both states donated beach balls each side of Long Beach Harbor in Southern California during Father’s Day weekend. Throughout the years there have been many different types or objects which have been gifted to members or crewmembers of the Coast Guard- some which are still being used today while others have been passed down through ownership or donation by individual units or agencies over time. Some examples include: warships (1939-1945), fishing gear (1951-1975), clocks (1978-1981), bikes (1985-1991), collectibles (1974-1979) and even furniture (1996).

In 1881, Cartersville was founded by the brothers Thomas and David Carter. The town was named for General Joseph E. Johnston, who fought in the American Civil War. The townsite was located on a tract of land that had been gifted to them by their father-in-law, George Washington Carver. The Carvers were farmers who grew cotton and other crops. In 1865, they moved from their original home near Dahlonega to make way for the founding of Georgia Tech University. They donated the land for Tech’s first campus and built what is now the Administration Building. When Tech moved to its current location in 1913, the Cartersville Agricultural Society continued to grow crops and maintain a barn/grazing area on their property. In 1950, when Carr's Store closed down, it became one of only two small grocery stores in town (the other being Pritchett's). It remained open until it burned down in 1978. Today, there is only one building remaining from Carr's Store - the foundation still stands today as part of Pritchett's restaurant inside Carr's store complex!
The town of Cartersville, Georgia was founded by George Washington in 1777. It was named for him and his father, James Carr. The town developed as a post-Revolutionary stronghold due to its strategic location on the Appomattox River. In 1801, it became a U.S. town when Georgia become a U.S. territory
