The history of the navy in Carrollton, Georgia goes back to 1843. The first naval station in the area was established at Fort Moultrie on the Savannah River, and it functioned as a military base until 1864. That year, War Department General Order No. 10 directed that all naval stations be moved from Fortress Augusta to Hilton Head Island so that they could be closer to Confederate forces fighting in the Southern Rebellion. After Confederate defeat at Appomattox Court House, most of Hilton Head Island was turned over to Union control, and Fort Moultrie returned to Confederate hands. In 1871, Fort Moultrie became an armament depot for the navy and served as such until 1919 when it was decommissioned and replaced by Naval Station Carrollton. Naval Station Carrollton played a significant role during both World War I and World War II. It was home to submarines LCI(L)s (Landing Craft Infantry) and LCM(L)s ( Landing Craft Mechanized), among other vessels. The jet-powered USS Enterprise (CV-6) made her first combat cruise off Naval Station Carrollton on 7 December 1944 during World War II when she operated out of this station as part of Task Force 58 under Admiral Chester Nimitz’s command Northeast Carriers Task Force (NEATF). During World War II, Naval Station Carrollton also hosted Operation Crossroads which aimed to unite Nazi Germany’s Navy with Japan’s Navy in order to drive Allied shipping out of the Mediterranean Sea. This operation was code-named Neptune’s Spear because it would occur simultaneously across three fleets—the British Fleet led by Admiral Sir Harold Bullen; American Fleet Commander Vice Admiral JG Cooke; and German Fleet Commander Erhard Bock—and their respective commanders were scheduled to meet aboard HMS Eagle at Malta on 8 November 1942 just prior to Neptune’s Spear. Unfortunately for Allied planners, Japanese forces had anticipated their meeting and prepared for it well before schedule; consequently, only limited damage took place duringCrossroads operations off Malta while a large number of merchant ships were sunk or captured by Japanese sailing boats off Alexandria Harbor on 11 November 1942 . After WWII ended, Naval Station Carrollton reverted back into an armament depot until its closing in 1969. Today it is used as a park located adjacent to Interstate 285 near downtown Atlanta.

The most important event in history for Carrollton occurred on November 15th1920 when General John Bell Hood’s Confederate army attacked Union forces under General George McClellan near Chattanooga and destroyed much of the town including its courthouse and jail. This event helped spur development in the area as businesses were established to support military activity in nearby Chattanooga and other towns. In 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces occupied Carrollton and killed many of its citizens including some who had been taken into captivity. Many residents returned after Japan's withdrawal from World War II but some remain evacuated until they can rejoin their families back home in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Today, Carrollton is an active community with a variety of businesses and cultural attractions that attract both locals and tourists alike. Its downtown contains several buildings from the 1800s remains significant today as an example of Gothic Revival architecture . There are also several new structures built since 2000 that have replaced older buildings within the downtown core which gives it a contemporary feel .
