Carrollton is a city in Carroll County, Georgia, United States. The population was 15,515 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carroll County. Carrollton was founded by General James Hogg and his wife on December 12, 1819 as part of the new Cherokee Nation after their removal from Georgia. The first settler in what is now Carrollton was Harrison Knox who arrived in 1824. In 1860, John Ransom built a cotton gin and distillery here which made him one of the largest industrialists in Alabama. In 1865 he donated land for a railroad to be built through his territory and this helped make Carrollton an important town throughout the 19th century. The current downtown district was designed by McKim, Mead & White and opened in 1909. The architecture features Stick-like towers with Arabic Revival details that give it an appearance similar to Cairo, Egypt. In 1966 Carrolton became home to North Carolina State University (NCSU) when it moved from Raleigh to Durham following statehood within the United States. NCSU has ever since been one of the largest employers in town with over 20 000 employees worldwide including 1 000 research assistants and 300 graduate students!

The town grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to its location next to the railroad and its proximity to major cities such as Atlanta and Savannah. By 1930, Carrollton had reached a population of 10,000 people and it became an important agricultural center for the region. In recent decades, however, Carrollton has seen significant growth in commercial activity and as a result has lost some of its rural character. Carrollton is located on State Route 278 about 12 miles south of Maconville and 7 miles east of Athens. It is bordered by Mount Carmel to the north; I-285 to the east; woods to the south; and Mustangs Lake to the west. According to The 2010 United States Census Bureau, Carrolton had a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), all land. As of 2000, there were 3,719 people living in Carrolton proper (the incorporated part of town), 1106 households out of which 34% had children under age 18 living with them, 54% were married couples living together, 8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32% were non-families. In terms of housing units: 31%of all households were made up of individuals who lived alone,[1] 11% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older,[2] 9% had someone who was 65 years or older but did not have any children under 18 living with them,[3] 5%were unmarried couples without children[4], 3%had two people live together[5], 2%had three people live together[6], 1%had four people live together[7], 1%,and 1%.

The town grew quickly due to its location along the Chattahoochee River, and soon had a population of over 2,000 residents. In 1885, the city annexed the adjacent village of Decatur.
