Carrollton, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the Chattahoochee River and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first white person to live in Carrollton was Andrew Gregg who settled there in 1802. In 1827, John Carrol settled there with his family. In 1830, General Nathan Bedford Forrest founded a plantation near present-day Carrollton and named it for himself. Fulton County was established in 1836 and Carrollton became its seat. It remained an agricultural community until the arrival of railroad developers in the early 20th century. The first rail line came through here in 1892. The city of Atlanta was founded nearby in 1886, but Carrollton never grew very large—only 2,000 people lived there as of 1910. However, this changed after World War II when new industry arrived: carpet and textile manufacturing became dominant here during the late 1940s and early 1950s; Coca-Cola began production here; and then later defense contractor Raytheon developed here some of their most advanced technology including radar antennas and missile systems. Today much of that old industry remains vacant or abandoned while other parts have been renovated into residential areas such as Clayton Park Corporate Center which sits on a landfill next to Interstate 285/285E between I-285/I-280 (north) and I-75 (south).
