Carrollton is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 16,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Georgia State Capitol and many other government buildings. The area that now Carrollton was first settled by English colonists in 1795. The town of Carrollton was founded on November 1, 1811 by John Carroll, an American Revolutionary War general and Congressman from Virginia. Because of its strategic location at the intersection of two major wagon trails—the Old National Road and the Andrew Johnson Highway—Carrollton quickly became a center for trade and transportation in central Georgia. By 1830, it had become the third largest town in Fulton County after Atlanta and Milledgeville. In 1848, following his controversial victory over General Nathan Bedford Forrest at Kennesaw Mountain, Confederate General Robert Ewell established himself as the new leader of the Peach Belt region around Atlanta. Ewell needed to find a new capital if he were to take control of all of southern Georgia; he selected Carrolton because it was near both Savannah and Macon–Bibb counties (then part of Cobb County). After gaining control over most of southcentralGeorgia, Ewell moved his headquarters from Augusta to Carrolton in January 1849. During Reconstruction (1868-1877), Carrolton played an important role as a crossroads between white Republicans and black Democrats who hoped to overthrow segregationist laws within their own Satchelsville communities across central Georgia. In 1923 African Americans constituted nearly 50%of Carrollton's population; however this percentage dropped to 25% during World War II when most African Americans served in military or civilian roles throughout Georgias entire war effort. The town was named for Colonel John Carroll, a Scottish officer who helped defeat British forces at the battle of Monmouth in 1776. After a brief period as a tobacco settlement, Carrollton grew rapidly as an agricultural center and became one of the most important towns in Cherokee County. In 1837, it was incorporated as a city under the name of Atlanta. In 1865, Confederate General Jumper Ewell moved his army from Chattanooga to try to take Atlanta by force. The failed attempt resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries during what is known as “the Battle of Atlanta”. Many people in Carrollton lost relatives or friends during that attack. After the war, many businesses were destroyed or taken over by African Americans working on Reconstruction efforts across America. But despite this challenge, Carrollton continued to grow economically until World War II when it lost its status as an industrial center due to falling demand for cotton goods after World War I endedaged production around the world. Today, Carrollton remains a small but thriving community with active cultural and recreational activities such as arts and crafts shows, concerts, dances and fireworks displays throughout the year.
