Carrollton is a city in Carroll County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Carrollton was John Goff who arrived in 1793. Goff had come from England on a ship commanded by Captain James Cook and his family. He landed near what is now downtown Carrollton on July 3, 1793 and began to build a log cabin which he named "Goff's Cabin." Settlement grew slowly at first due to lack of transportation and water resources, but when railroads came through the area in the late 19th century, changes ensued. Carrolton became an important railroad junction with connections to both Atlanta and Chattanooga. The economy changed as cotton production increased throughout the South during this time period; consequently, many businesses were born including Coca-Cola Bottling Company (founded in 1903), Woodward Trucking Company ( founded 1925), and First National Bank (formed 1929). During World War II, many residents enlisted or served in the military; among these men were Forrest Sherman (founder of Chrysler) and Clarence Thomas (leader of the Supreme Court justice hearings). After Pearl Harbor, Cartlonians responded with patriotism by donating materials for munitions plants across southern Georgia as well as donations to organizations like American Red Cross Society throughout the war effort. In 1946, when Carrollton celebrated its centennial year as a city it boasted one of America’s most modern post office buildings – one that still stands today! As recently as 1990 little had changed since then other than some updated architecture; however over time much has improved with more advanced infrastructure such as sewers and streetlights! Today Cartlonians enjoy their qualityof life second only to that found withinAtlanta itself!
