Canton was founded in 1797 by the merger of two small settlements, Canton and Stonecreek. The town quickly grew to become a center of trade and commerce, becoming known for its natural resources such as coal, cotton, and rails. In 1811, the Georgia General Assembly passed a bill establishing what is now Fulton County as part of the state. As part of this transaction, Canton became the new county seat.
