The National Guard of the United States of America was created on September 15, 1947 by President Harry Truman. The Guard is a reservist force that provides a militia-like presence in local communities to support national security and public safety objectives. The Guard has deployments throughout the U.S., as well as overseas. It also has detachments in Puerto Rico and Guam. The history of the National Guard can be traced back to 1793 when Georgia raised an official regiment of militia called the 1st Battalion, Georgia Regiment for service in the French and Indian War (1793-94). In 1802, South Carolina organized its own Militia Act providing for state guard duty within their borders. These militias were model after English Volunteer Regiments which had been levied following the Napoleonic Wars from various colonies in North America. In 1861, Texas raised its first volunteer regiment under then Governor Sam Houston; this unit became known as Company H (5th Infantry) Texas Rangers Brigade on July 11, 1861 at City Point near Galveston Bayou where it relieved Confederate Units guarding San Antonio River Bridge upstream from downtown San Antonio until it was disbanded on October 25th due to lack of volunteers and equipment needed for such an extended mission over so many months! On November 2nd 1862 during American Civil War – Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered his army into Gatewood Gap on Appomattox Courthouse Grounds east of Petersburg according to flank march order found at Andersonville Confederate Prison Camp Union Soldiers Names & Dates file #2118/11/2/1862 “At 9 A M I remained inside four walls of piled earth without water or food until dark when orders came that we should move out under cover of darkness across open ground towards Johnston’s lines Butchertown Road about twelve miles distant” This Order resulted in loss of over one hundred men including Captains James Longstreet, Francis Marion and Alexander McAllister who later died while serving with distinction at Chickamauga Battlefield Cemetery south west of Atlanta GA In 1865 some units remaining loyal to Confederate States moved westward into what is now Oklahoma Territory whence they formed Ranger Companies 10TH Cavalry Regiment Oklahoma Volunteers detachment dated 8/1 1863 from towns along route now designated Route 66 East side Apalachicola Atoka Tulsa McAlester Ponca City Council House 7 mile NW corner old US Highway 19 nw OK State Capitol building
