Canton, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 8,461 at the 2010 census. Canton is the county seat of Fulton County. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town of Canton was founded in 1807 by Captain James Cook and his men as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River. In 1812, General Alexander MacDonough built Fort Gaines on a bluff overlooking the river for use as a military outpost against Creek Indians. In 1816, Commodore John Fitch transferred from Savannah to take control of the Alabama trade with Georgia and Mississippi River ports including Canton. In 1834, Colonel James A. Cooke established what became known as Cooke's Academy which prepared white students for college entrance examinations in North America and Europe. White settlement began around this time and by 1840 there were over 100 houses in town; most were set back from the river to make way for new cotton plantations or warehouses being developed nearby along the creek bed and railroads now called Cobb Parkway and Ponce de Leon Avenue). The first schoolhouse in town was built around 1830 on College Street near present day Union Station (now Peachtree Center Mall). The first Baptist church was erected in1848 just east of present day US-1/US-441 interchange on Park Avenue adjacent to Springdale Cemetery (). The first Methodist church also was erected soon afterwards on Church Street between Third Street (now Martin Luther King Jr.) Boulevard and Masonic Temple Drive.). A store opened up at current day intersection of Strickland Road/Peachtree Center Parkway about 1855 that served residents until 1898 when it closed due to competition from several grocery stores operating south of Interstate 85 then coming online since 1960s across Hartsfield–Jackson International Airport boundary making Canton one last stop before leaving ATL for good - although not completely forgotten as many people still visit annually while living outside ATL limits) In 1861 during American Civil War rations were distributed through canton primarily through private families giving rise to local nickname "The Grapes" because so much produce grown here went unsold at home
