Canton is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 15,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and the home of the high school for Canton-area students, Canton High School. The town has been known for its tool industry since before it was incorporated as a municipality in 1872. In 1907, an important cotton gin based in Canton became part of Marietta Manufacturing Company which led to a rapid growth in the Tool Industry in Canton during that time frame. The first settler to arrive in what is now Canton was John Chapman who arrived on July 1, 1786 with his family from North Carolina. He and his wife Sarah built a log cabin on the east side of what is now US 19 near present day Cross Keys Boulevard. By 1800, they had four children: John (born 1800), Susannah (born 1802), James (born 1804) and Sally (born 1807). In 1868, when Lumpkin County was created from portions of Randolph and Gwinnett counties, most of what is now Fulton County including Canton Township were within Lumpkin County. However, due to this change in government structure, certain towns within Fulton County - such as Chattahoochee Valley and Midtown - ended up within Randolph/Gwinnett Counties until 1898 when their boundaries were changed again by legislation passed by Congress following Sherman's elevation of Atlanta to become America's new capital city. This legislation also extended cantonal jurisdiction into Cobb County which at that time included much of northern Fulton County including today's downtown areas of Atlanta and Decatur Heights as well as all but a small portion of south Cobb COUNTY including Stone Mountain Park. As far back as 1871 there existed discussion among some residents about forming a municipality or town within the newly formed Clayton Township located just east of present day Canton on I-285 between I-85 and Hwy 20A until finally this idea was given serious consideration after local businessmen petitionedCenterville City Council to create such an entity on December 12th,, 1870 . On January 24th,, 1872 , after careful review by both Centerville City Council members Abel Laddie Chairman George Wager Vice Chairman Charles Burchill minority representative Dillard Bowen voting 3–2 along party lines for incorporation under name "Canton" appeared on official papers filed with Secretary Of State Daniel Webster containing plat map showing location & lots assigned.... After much deliberation only 2 trustees - Abel Laddie & George Wager - voted against incorporation while 3 trustees - Charles BurchillChairman Dillard Bowen & Daniel WebsterSecretary approved incorporating under name "Canton" with plat map attached...... It should be noted that despite being initially founded almost two hundred years ago under another name – "Canton" – modern day Canton has quickly become one of metro Atlanta’s most vibrant cities fullof history and culture dating back more than three centuries! Today’s community sprang from humble beginnings; originally called simply “Milton” after one early settler who homesteaded thereabouts – thanks largely to several volunteer incorporations over ensuing decades resulting variously in job creation opportunities for locals & visitors alike! Canton was founded in 1801 by Captain James Cook, who named it for the town of Canton, England. The town became a post office in 1802. In 1818, the U.S. government organized the Georgia Territory from areas east of the Mississippi River and south of Lake Pontchartrain. In 1821, Canton and other towns within the Territory elected a Board of Commissioners to manage its affairs. In 1830, the Board discontinued operations because of financial problems. In 1835, Governor Thomas Fenton created a new state out of parts of Georgia and Alabama called Florida. Florida included most of what is now Canton County as well as much of what is now Thomson County and some portions are located in today's Chattahoochee Valley area in eastern Fulton County near Atlanta. When Florida was admitted to the United States on February 14, 1837, Canton became part of Alabama under its own government but continued to use its original name until 1840 when it again reverted back to Georgia under federal jurisdiction
