In 1801, two brothers named John and James Cook set up a trading post near what is now Canton Junction on the Chattahoochee River. They named their settlement after the main thoroughfare in England—the Grand Junction Road—which they had seen as a source of supplies and trade for their troops fighting against Native Americans. The post served as a stopping point for wagon trains traveling between Georgia and points east during the American Revolution. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson founded what is now known as Georgia State University in Athens. Jackson's decision to establish university in Athens rather than Savannah due to concerns over high tuition prices there led to development around Canton Courthouse Square – now home to many notable businesses and residences – including one brick building that still stands today that housed Jackson's personal secretary, Samuel Prentice Peabody. Peabody's addition to the square helped spur growth around Canton until it became too small for business owners and residents to keep up with demand for housing and services such as education and health care when he built his own mansion on Courthouse Square in 1851. During Reconstruction following Reconstruction Periods (1868-1912), many African Americans migrated from southern states into northern states seeking opportunities during this time period; however, most arrived through fraudulent means or were forced out by white mobs violence or terrorizing them into leaving their homes. Many of these refugees settled near what are now downtown Canton without any attempts by local authorities to provide basic amenities such as housing or jobs for them while also facing discrimination from both white landowners who refused to allow black people onto their properties nor blacks themselves who often viewed these newcomers with suspicion because they did not hold property rights like themselves. This mistrust often led to violence by either side against those living among these new arrivals which ultimately created resentment amongst all groups involved: African Americans accused whites of racism while whites accused African Americans of taking advantage of poorly placed circumstances while also accusing those same Africans Americanized names like "Canton" which made them easy prey for robbers during this time period given that few black people could read or write so they lacked any legal recourse should things go wrong; furthermore, although some African Americans managed eventuallyto assimilate into society overall, others remained largely segregated within their own community until well into the 21st century despite efforts by some organizations such as Black History Month Committee Inc., Atlanta Area Chamber/Atlanta Business Improvement District (ABID) & nearby neighborhoods [1]

Canton is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia, located on the Chattahoochee River. The population was 38,876 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Georgia and one of its most populous cities outside of Atlanta. It is also one of the fastest-growing large metropolitan areas in America. The first European to visit Canton was Lieutenant James Cook in 1795 while exploring Georgia’s waterways for new trade routes with Asia. The area around Canton had been inhabited by Native Americans since before Europeans arrived, but their villages were not founded until after 1800 when white settlers began moving into what is now Canton from surrounding counties. In 1802, John Rankin founded Rankin County and named it after himself, ranking as one of the luckiest men in American history because he acquired title to land that then formed part of present-day Canton from other counties. He built his home near what is now downtown Canton and made many donations towards building a school and courthouse on his land which became known as “Rankin Heights” or simply “Rankin County” today. In 1807, two years after Rankin's purchase of land east of what is now downtown Canton from other counties, General Andrew Jackson moved his army northeastward through central Georgia to attack Mobile Bay and Fort Stedman on April 11th – still considered an important event in United States history because it signifiedthe end of Seminole Wars between Spain and America - leading to what are now known as Jacksonian Era rule over much of central/south Georgia (including parts currently located within Cobb County). As a result of this battle near where Canton sits today, many mansions near Chattanooga were fortified with cannons so they could repel any future invasions by Spanish forces during Reconstruction following the Civil War. In 1828, the Canton community was founded by a group of farmers who were looking for a place to worship God. The area at that time consisted of only two farms and no other buildings. The first church in Canton was built in 1829. In 1861, the town had a population of about eighty people and it began to grow as more and more people started moving into the area. By 1913, the population had grown to over one thousand people. In 1922, Canton became an incorporated city and it continued to grow until its annexation by Atlanta in 1960.
