In 1821, the Militia Act of 21st March gave new life to the army by authorizing 2 regiments (10 companies) to be raised for service with a view to maintaining law and order in newly acquired territories. In 1861, when Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most of Georgia’s military units including artillery batteries were disbanded and sent home. However, one regiment (the 4th GA Infantry Regiment) remained in Atlanta until 1865. This regiment became known as “the Georgians” because it had been recruited from among those who had fought under General Robert E. Lee during his successful campaign against Union forces at Appomattox Court House. After the war ended and Reconstruction began in America, interest in recruiting soldiers for service grew again and more regiments were raised- this time totaling 42 companies (2 brigades). In 1903, two more brigades were added: one based at Fort Benning and another at Augusta Barracks. By 1938 there were six active infantry divisions; four cavalry divisions; three artillery divisions; two medical detachments; 1 Signal Corps detachment; 1 naval detachment and a training battalion (later redesignated as an armoured force). The Army also possessed a large airforce which operated out of bases around the country providing aerial support for ground operations throughout World War II. During World War II there was a drastic change within the Army as women joined men into all branches of service including infantry battalions and armor brigades along with Air Force elements stationed overseas - creating what is now known as “the modern army” with over 350 000 personnel serving across 43 countries worldwide today!

The original downtown core still preserves much from its early days as an agricultural outpost on the edge of what is now metropolitan Atlanta. In 1886, Canton became one of five cities in Georgia to become chartered with municipal powers by act of the state Legislature following passage of the Municipal Powers Act (1885). This legislation created an entity that would provide services to residents within their respective cities without having to go through county commissioners or other local government officials. Canton's mayoral form of government continued until 1907 when Mayor James Gwin resigned due to health reasons and was succeeded by his vice mayor George Witherspoon who served until 1913 when he also resigned due to health reasons. In 1917, after World War I ended and Atlanta emerged as a leading cultural and commercial center, Canton began leasing properties from Coca-Cola Company founder John Dickey in what is now Midtown Atlanta for use as open space including Peachtree Center for Performing Arts and then Three Rivers Arena for professional basketball games between 1962-1983 and 2003-2007 before being sold to ligitallicken corporation Cobb Energy LLC in 2006 which renamed it Philips Arena which again changed ownership in 2017 becoming Opryland theme park with shows through 2021
Canton was founded by the Canton Band of Cherokee Indians in 1829. It was named for Colonel John Canton, a military officer who had helped lead the Cherokee resistance to white encroachment. The first settler in what is now Canton was James Mowers, who purchased land in 1833. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in the town.
