In 1836, a group of entrepreneurs started the Second National Coffee Company in Athens, Georgia. This company was much more successful than the First National Coffee Company and became very well-known throughout America for their excellent coffee products. In 1840, this company merged with another business called Peet’s Sons & Co., which made it one of the largest coffee companies in America at that time! Calhoun is a town in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Calhoun began as a small Baptist settlement on the south side of DeKalb County, founded in 1801 by John Calhoun and his wife Anna Lamar. The first settler named Calhoun was probably John carryance who settled in 1798 near present-day Claytonville. In 1802, James Gillett built a cabin on what is now Calhoun Hill and started to grow crops. By 1807, most of the settlers had arrived and built homes around what is now downtown Calhoun. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Chattanooga to DeKalb County after winning the Battle of New Orleans and became its first governor. He chose Calhoun as one of his two main residences during his time in office. In 1821, he appointed Captain Jonathan Baldwin to be the first postmaster for Calhoun and Baldwin served until 1830 when he moved to Savannah because it offered better prospects for business development than DeKalb County did at that time. The first town in what became Calhoun County was Indianola and it was named for General James H. Calhoun who fought against the Seminole Tribe of Florida during the 1813–1814 War of 1812. The town declined due toInitial meager resources and lack of development until around 1860 when settlers began arriving from southern Alabama by way of Mobile Bay and Mars Hill on Catawba River. A post office called Indianola was established in 1853, but it closed in 1865 because there were no mail deliveries to the area from that point on. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War (1861-1865), African Americans were disenfranchised and many prosperous white farmers moved into what became known as Black Belt counties west of Atlanta while most black citizens remained in the south1 In 1870, John Gentry founded a cotton gin near present day downtown Chattanooga which soon became an important center for cotton production in east Tennessee2 By 1880, over one hundred small towns had been established within East Tennessee along with numerous plantations3 However, economic dislocation caused by an expanding railroads industry and other factors led to rapid decline for most eastern Tennessean communities by 19004 In 1907, one thousand five hundred people lived in downtown Chattanooga when its heyday as a commercial center ended5 Despite this downturn, various attempts have been made over recent years to bring back some glimmer of hope6 however all havefailed7 currently housing units make up less than 5% of all structures erected within Calhoun since 18008
