He was given the responsibility of patrolling certain areas within the town and helping to maintain order. The department continued to grow until it had six officers by 1954 when WOODS SERVICE CALHOUN POLICE INCorporated was formed with eight officers total. In 1966, CALHOUN POLICE CORPS FM 1005 became LAW ENFORCEMENT FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY IN CALhoun (BLEACH) with JAMES HARRISON as its first Chief Police Officer/ Commander. From then on, all black police Officers were eligible for appointment to this position which is now known as PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER in Calhoun GA

Calhoun is a town in Calhoun County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Clarke Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Calhoun County was Levi Coffin in 1786. He and his family were the only white settlers in what became Calhoun County until 1837 when two families from Uniontown moved into the county and named it after their father, John C. Calhoun (1763-1837). In 1830 George W. Patton founded a small farmstead on an existing piece of land about four miles west of present day Covington for himself and his three slaves under indenture from James Polk's administration as Quartermaster General of the United States army during the First Seminole War (1835-1839). In 1835 Patton sold all his lands to Andrew Jarrell who built a house thereon which he called "Patton's Plantation". In 1841 Jarrell married Sarah Aiken and erected a plantation house on this property which they continued to live in until 1893 when they sold it to Hagerty Earle Fenton who renamed it "Fenton's Plantation" after himself. After Fenton died without children, it passed through several hands before being purchased by Gertrude Brewster Missen in 1941 who donated it to Calhoun Historical Society for use as an historical museum/research lab with its current name reflecting its original purpose: "The History Museum of Georgia - Home of Gertrude Brewster Missen." During World War II most residents took up arms against Japan and many served in uniform or went off to fight; however, few members of the townspeople actually lived there during that time period because much of their work was done at nearby military installations such as Fort Benning and Fort Knox. One resident who did participate actively during that conflict was James Ransom who served as captain of Company B2/5th Infantry Regiment 9th Infantry Division stationed at Ft Benning from 1942 until 1945 while also serving as sniper for Co V/1st Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment 1st Infantry Division stationed at Ft Knox from 1943 until 1945; both units fought along side each other across multiple theaters including Normandy, Southern France, Germany & Austria etc.. Most people within town were either too poor or too busy with other responsibilities to join any active combat efforts although some may have seen action if required but chose not to go through with it due to health concerns or simply because they could not afford it. calhoun ga history
Calhoun was a slaveholding community in the Creek Nation located in present-day Calhoun County, Georgia. The community was founded by a group of settlers from what is now Alabama who arrived in 1802. The first white settler was James Caldwell, who purchased land at the mouth of the Chattahoochee River from the Chickasaw Nation. In 1805, Caldwell and his wife, Rebecca, built a cabin on their land and started to raise cotton. They were soon joined by others and in 1807 they formed a company to purchase more land. They named their new town after John C. Calhoun, an American statesman who served as Secretary of State under President George Washington during the War of Independence. The town grew rapidly and by 1819 it had over 100 residents inside its walls. By 1830, however, most of the town's residents had left for unknown reasons and it slowly declined until it ceased to exist around 1840.
