The history of the National Guard in Calhoun, Georgia can be traced back to 1861. At that time, the Georgia General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the arming and training of a national guard force for defense against insurrection or invasion. The first unit to be organized was Company A of the 2nd Regiment Georgia Volunteers, which was raised on July 1, 1861. The purpose of the National Guard in Georgia at this time was twofold: to provide a reserve force for state troops called up for military purposes; and to protect citizens from threatened violence or insurrection. In addition, members of the National Guard were used as bodyguards for prominent officials and as an enforcement arm within local communities. However, by 1862, it had become evident that such an organization would not be able to meet the needs of Georgians during times of peace. As a result, Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered all units in the state militia disbanded on October 15th. Consequently, many Georgians who had enlisted in the Guardsmen found themselves without their arms and equipment. This lack of resources eventually led to some members becoming involved in criminal activities while others resigned their posts in order to avoid serving with Forrest's forces. Nonetheless, through hard work and determination over several years many Georgians were able re-enlist into their national guard units (and sometimes transfer back) until 1864 when federal soldiers arrived in town following Confederate victory at Bull Run Mountain. Aftermath told us that these men "were needed more than ever" because "the negroes had taken possession...of nearly every white man's property." Brigadier General John Cone observed that "Georgia is now too much under [Northern] control...to allow her people so freely as they formerly didquerade as our friends." Consequently Cone ordered all men deserters from his regiment bounty hunters into military service instead where they received better pay and benefits than civil servants receiving no compensation whatsoever from their employers -a clear indication that patriotism was something very different then today! Despite its shortcomings during Reconstruction era ( characterized by high rates of crime and illiteracy), statewide organizations including companies A-G continued being raised until 1865 when state government became fully self-supporting again after reconstruction ended

The history of Calhoun County began with its founding by white settlers in 1821 as part of what is now Baldwin County on the northeast coast of Mobile Bay. At that time it included parts of present-day Appling and Clarke counties as well as much of what is now eastern Baldwin County and much of what is now southern Sumter County.
