The history of military deployed gifts in Calhoun, Georgia goes back to the early 1800s. The area was first populated by Cherokee Indians and then by settlers who arrived during the American Revolution. In 1779, General James Oglethorpe led a combined British and Indian army against the Cherokee Indians in what is now known as the Battle of Coweta Creek. The Indian forces were defeated and Oglethorpe was captured. He was later released but died at sea while trying to return home. His soldiers took his body to Georgia and interred him near Calhoun. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson became President of the United States and ordered all U.S. troops withdrawn from Georgia except for a small detachment under Admiral David Barron cruising off Savannah Harbor. Barron had been sent there to purchase goods needed for an upcoming invasion of Mexico City that would begin two weeks later. When he learned about Jackson's orders, Barron decided to send his ship instead into Savannah Harbour with some supplies in order to give Jackson a good reputation for being impartial during wartime decisions. When news reached Jacksonville about what had happened, Governor John Chilton ordered Barron's men not to enter Savannah Harbour or show themselves onshore until further notice. This caused a schism between Barclay's men and those led by Captain Isaac Watts who entered the harbour unopposed. While this event is generally considered to bethe start of the War Between the States, it actually happened one month earlier when Commodore John Dahlgren sailed into Savannah Harbour with reinforcements needed for duties planned for late summer in Florida Bayou Swamp Campaign (1818-1819).
Calhoun is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The town of Calhoun was founded by colonists in 1785 and grew up around the courthouse, schoolhouse and other buildings located there until 1836 when it became part of the newly created state of Georgia. In 1868, it was renamed for James Fenton Calhoun, a U.S. Senator from South Carolina who had been won election as an Atlanta Democrat to succeed John Quincy Adams as president of the United States in 1868. The town continued to serve as its own municipal government until 1925 when it merged with neighboring Decatur into one municipality under the name of "Fulton County". In 1955, following passage of legislation annexing portions of Muscogee County east of Interstate 20 in order to create Marietta–Fulton metropolitan area, Calhoun became part of that new entity as well. In 2013 voters approved annexing another portion (approximately ) of Muscogee County to form Gwinnett Metro area which now includes all but two municipalities within Fulton County: Roswell and Decatur/Alpharetta – both incorporated cities - making Calhoun once again a city proper within FultonCounty limits dating back to 1800s! According to the 2010 Census*, there were 7,898 people living in Calhoun City Limits including 1,711 households and 552 families residing inside urban areas while 3% (292) lived outside Urban Areas* (*based on 2000 US Census). Of these total residents*, 2% were foreign born; however this number has since decreased due to natural attrition over time (-2% per year). Most inhabitants are citizens or permanent residents who have resided here for more than five years*. Calhoun was a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, located on the border of Cobb County and DeKalb County. The town was named for James Calhoun, an early settler. In 1881, the land around Calhoun became part of the new city of Atlanta. The first settlers to live in what is now Calhoun arrived in 1790. They were men from North Carolina and Virginia who had come down the Chattahoochee River as traders and missionaries. From these initial arrivals came many more over time, including several hundred blacks who worked as slaves on plantations in neighboring counties. By 1800, there were about 100 black people living in Calhoun. The first school in what is now Calhoun was built near the intersection of Purdy Road and White Street in 1796 by local farmers John Ladd and his son Ebenezer. It served children up to the age of 10 years old at a time when schools were not common among rural families. In 1801, a second school opened at 209 Bolton Road which students could attend until they reached the age of 16 years old or until they married; it continued to serve this purpose until 1906 when it was replaced by an all-girls high school called Bryn Mawr School which still serves students today. In 1814, James Calkins purchased 640 acres (248 ha) east of present-day Dalton from Colonel Thomasات McDonough for $1 per acre ($8 per ha). This allowed him to build a mill on Creek Run thatoperated successfully until 1859 when it burned down due to faulty construction; however, Calkins' grant helped establish Cherokee Industrial & Manufacturing Company west of Dalton as one of America's largest textile mills during the antebellum period Thereafter some portions (eastern half) became part of Cobb County while others (western half) remained within Fulton County for more than a century before becoming part of Gwinnett County . The following year James Matson purchased 1/4 mile east from present day Rufus Hargrave's home along Westside Highway for $2 per acre ($16 per ha).
