Calhoun, Georgia is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first settler in Calhoun was James Ransom, who arrived in 1795 and built a cabin on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. In 1819, George Calhoun moved to what is now Calhoun from Milledgeville and started a farm. He named his farm after his father, John Calkins Calhoun. In 1831, William Payne bought land near present-day Calhoun from George Catlett and started a cotton plantation there. William Payne's son, General Robert Ewing Payne (1847-1920), served as military governor of Georgia from 1895 to 1900 and oversaw reconstruction following the American Civil War. In 1865, General Robert Ewing Payne donated 1/4 acre (0.20 hectare) of land for downtown development in what is now known as Payne Park which includes today's courthouse square and business districts north of Interstate 285 where most of today's Seventh Street meets I-285; eastward along Telephone Road to modern day Ponce de Leon Avenue; southward along Peachtree Road to Modern Day University Avenue; westward along Fulton Street adjacent to current day Cobb Plaza shopping district until it reaches its terminus at Woodward Avenue just east of Ponce de Leon Avenue.. On December 12th 1905 local citizens ratified an ordinance giving their town its current name - "Calhoun" - in honor of then US Senator Howell Cobb (R – GA).
