Calhoun County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,843. Its name is derived from James Calhoun, an American statesman and diplomat who served as U.S. Minister to Spain during the Gadsden Purchase dispute in 1848. The word "calhoun" comes from Old English hinca meaning "hill," "mountain," or "peak." The first settler in what became Calhoun County was George Hinson in 1817. Settlers continued to move into this area until it had a population of about 3,000 by 1830. This rapid growth can be traced back to two factors: 1) The disputed purchase of land between Britain and America by Houston Stewart Chamberlain and Andrew Johnson which led to much political discussion; and 2) The Black Hawk War (1840-1841), during which many frontier settlers moved southward due to worries over slave raiding by Native Americans. In 1836, John Capps organized what would become Calhoun County when he purchased land east of then- existing Cherokee County from Chief Mocama for $2 per acre. It wasn't until 1847 that James Buchanan became President of the United States after being elected as part of the Whig Party’s coalition with Jacksonian Democrats across the country; Buchanan wanted Mississippi taken away from its cotton-producing southern neighbor so he could invest in education and other areas across America including Georgia where slavery still prevailed despite his efforts at freedom proclamation in 1850 calling for its abolition throughout all reaches of America without exception - something that was still up for debate 25 years later! On July 16th, 1847 – just four days after taking office – Buchanan signed executive order No. 909 making Georgia a provisional Confederate State under control of General Earl Van Dorn! It didn't take long for Buchanan's policies on race to cause friction within his own party as well as among southerners; within six months, secession petitions were circulating throughout Georgia! However, even though most Georgians were supportive of their new president’s goals post-Civil War – especially considering they felt their rights had been violated both during and after the war - many saw things differently once Reconstruction began under Ulysses S Grant administration several years later...mostly because black African Americans started working off plantations rather than being indentured servants like before...forcing whiteownership rates among rural whites actually increased! In 1865 following Union victory at Gettysburg Address & end of Civil War – Reconstruction came to an end with Emancipation Proclamation & states rejoin Union (except for South Carolina). In 1870 Census there were 21,843 people living in CalhounCounty with just under half being enslaved African Americans outsource workers on large plantations used mainly for cultivation/production purposes according to2010 US Census figures !!! After Reconstruction ended there were mass migration into cities & elsewhere new opportunities opened up due largely to railroad construction linking different parts of America }); however today only a small minority remains affiliated with traditional agriculture or rural living
