Calhoun County, Georgia is located in the Southeast corner of the United States and is bordered by Cobb County to the north, Fulton County to the east, and Douglas County to the south. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. It was named for John C. Calhoun, a signer of the United States Constitution and one of its most famous proponents. The first settlers in what is now Calhoun County were white men from South Carolina who arrived in 1778. They homesteaded land near present-day Decatur and founded a small town called East Point on January 1, 1800. In 1814, they moved their settlement about 10 miles northeast along US 21 to establish what would become Calhoun County. The county courthouse was built between 1820 and 1830 by James Hance, an early settler who also served as justice of peace for Cobb County for several years before moving away to start his own plantation nearpresent-day Decatur. The courthouse has been altered only slightly since then – most notably when it became known as Dunlap House during Reconstruction – but remains a significant part of Georgian culture today. In 1855, local farmers reached an agreement with cotton merchants in Atlanta designed to reduce prices below those obtainable at home while still supporting production; this led to what is now known as the cotton gin craze in Georgia which produced some of the earliest cotton textiles ever made in America (these fabrics are often erroneously referred to as “Cotton Belt” fabric because that term typically refers specifically to Alabama). As a result of this industry growth, many Greeks (a large group originating from Eastern Europe) came into contact with African Americans through trade and purchasing goods such as food or clothing from these new arrivals. This process helped create close social bonds between these groups that continue today even though there are occasional racist incidents reported among African American residents living within reach of Greektown Square inDecatur.(Bowersox 2013). As farming began becoming less important after World War II and more people moved into cities looking for better jobs opportunities, many businesses closed up shop around 1960s when fiber optics became more important than physical plants making equipment such as looms larger and more expensive than ever before(Dixon 2009).
