Calhoun was a small town in northeastern Georgia, on the St. Clair River. It was founded by John Calhoun in 1782 as a result of his father's land purchase from the Creek Indians. The town grew rapidly and by 1810 had a population of 1,500 people. In 1812, Calhoun became the county seat of Fulton County and soon became an important commercial center. By 1834, Calhoun had become an agricultural settlement with about 100 residents; it was then that its cotton crop began to be developed into what is now known as Georgia cotton. In 1842, the town passed through various changes due to the American Civil War; it became part of Union territory but lost its status as a county seat and its importance declined precipitously thereafter. By 1865, however, it had regained some significance thanks to its position within Union lines near Atlanta and its role as an early manufacturer of firearms. After the war ended, Calhoun slowly regained some commercial prominence again until it closed in 1978 at which time its remaining buildings were demolished.

Calhoun is a town in Crawford County, Georgia, United States. The population was 666 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chattanooga–based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Calhoun was James A. Hogg on November 3, 1815. For many years it was a small community located near the forks of the Chickamauga and Flint Rivers. In 1825, Hogg donated 640 acres (250 hectares) of land to establish what would become Calhoun as a town with its own government and school system. In 1853, General John Custer fought his last battle at Greer before he journeyed west to join Charles Swayne's forces in the Mexican War of 1846-1848. While stationed at Fort Pillow in Alabama, Custer met Anna Maria Calhoun who shared her husband's interest in democratic reform and also served as an interpreter for Indian Chiefs during
The first European to explore Calhoun was Spanish Captain Alonso de Arequipa, who sailed through the area in 1559. In 1607, Englishman John Smith explored the Savannah River and its tributaries. The following year, French explorer Jacques Cartier reached the Mississippi River. By 1763, the British were occupying Georgia and had established Fort Augusta on the Savannah River. In 1794, General James Wilkinson invaded Georgia from north of the Tennessee River. He discovered and occupied what is now Calhoun County in 1803. The community was founded by Andrew Johnson as a result of his military campaigns in that area during the War for Independence. From 1822 to 1834, Georgia underwent a series of management changes which ultimately led to its annexation by Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Aftermath of that war saw large numbers of Georgians leave their homes in search of new opportunities in other states or countries. Many residents remaining in calhoun county rejoined forces with Union efforts after Vicksburg was taken by Union forces on April 12, 1865.
