The history of the Coast Guard in Calhoun, Georgia begins with the early days of the state. The first coast guard unit was organized on February 12th, 1836, and was known as the Calhoun Volunteer Infantry. The Coast Guard served in various capacities throughout the 1840s and 1850s, but it did not become a full-time law enforcement agency until 1861. In that year, the Georgia General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the creation of a coast guard service in response to concerns about land piracy along the Gulf of Mexico. The Coast Guard was originally called “The United States Naval Militia” and its first commander was Captain John Pemberton. It took until 1892 for Coast Guard duties to be transferred from militia to state government jurisdiction. From then on, it has been a part of both Georgia and California’s Department of Homeland Security. Today, there are over 4500 active duty members of the Coast Guard spread across 41 detachments located throughout Georgia and California. The mission of the Coast Guard is to protect maritime interests at sea and ashore by providing maritime security; deterring crime; investigating offenses; rescuing victims; supporting public safety activities; conducting search and rescue operations; providing environmental monitoring services; providing humanitarian assistance; participating in cooperative peacekeeping efforts; or responding to any other emergency situation related to marine life or seamanship

The Coast Guard Station in Calhoun, Georgia was established on November 25, 1941. The station's first commanding officer was Major General Charles W. Baldwin. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station became part of the Military District of Georgia and was assigned to the United States Southern Command. The Coast Guard Station in Calhoun was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HQHS) on October 1, 1960. On May 5, 1970, HQHS relocated from Brunswick to Calhoun after the closure of Brunswick Naval Air Station. On February 3, 1984, HQHS moved again when headquarters squadron (HC3) moved to Valdosta Naval Air Station from Dahlonega Naval Air Base. Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HQHS) were reactivated on October 1st 2006 at NAS Jacksonville Beach as a Component of Commander First District Mediterranean Fleet with responsibility for all maritime activities within that district including Patrol Operations/Coastguard Escort duty along with supporting other Federal Departments such as Homeland Security and Customs Service missions ashore or afloat
Calhoun is a small town in Georgia. It was founded in 1802 by John Calhoun, a white lawyer and slaveholder. The town stopped being called Calhoun after the death of John Calhoun's father in 1825. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army marched through Calhoun on their way to Petersburg. The citizens of the town gathered around the courthouse square to watch as Confederate soldiers passed by with blood smeared all over their Uniforms. After the war, the town slowly lost its population and fell into obscurity until it was rediscovered in 1978 when a group of preservationists began restoring parts of downtown from the 1800s. Today, Calhoun is an agricultural community that retains much of its early history and culture. The community has one high school and two churches which serve as cultural attractions for tourists visiting the area.
