The Buford-Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is located in the town. The first Europeans to visit what is now Buford were Dutch colonists who landed there in 1607. They named it "Willemstadt" after Willem de Vries, one of their leaders. In 1793, General James Wilkinson built Fort Moultrie here after his victory over the Creek Indians at Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. In 1815, Alexander Macon founded a plantation called "Buford Plantation" in what is now eastern Buford Township. The name was changed to "Buford", Incorporated as a village on November 2nd, 1881 by order of Governor John Crain from among those so designated by act of Congress entitled: An Act to provide for the organization and government of a Village within the limits set off for Athens County; but without any reference to which township or parish it might be situated. In 1898, American Tobacco Company built an extensive smokehouse complex northeast of Buford that still stands today thanks to its various uses such as manufacturing cigarettes and cigars since 1971 (see ). That same year saw also establishment of First Baptist Church which would later become Southern Baptist Convention's Headquarters (). In 1905 local physician Drury Senter began practicing here followed by dentist Drury McNutt in 1916 when he opened his practice on Commerce Boulevard just north of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. By 1950 there were more than 20 businesses operating here with about 1,500 people employed inside and outside the airport itself (). Today many notable citizens have made their homes in this longstanding community including Mayor Rusty Hardwick; Congressman Hank Johnson; former Mayor Shirley Franklin; Superintendent Tony Perkins; Chief Deputy Sheriff Lonnie Polk; US Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Aubrey Price (); State Senator Don Deal (); businesswoman Connie Lawson (); author Toni Morrison (); musician Willie Dixon (); journalist Jerry Hall (later co-creator/executive producer/director) Of particular note are two high school graduates who went onto lead successful careers: Al Whitehead ('84), president and CEO Delta Air Lines Corp.; and Donny Hathaway ('89), currently Managing Director United Parcel Service Co., Inc..
