The National Guard of Buford, Georgia was organized on December 1, 1907. The first National Guard unit in the state was Company K from Gainesville. The first duty of the National Guard was to protect citizens and property during the Mexican-American War. In 1912, the State Legislature passed a resolution that called for the formation of a regiment of Guardsmen to provide security for schools and other public buildings. In 1915, Governor John J. McClendon appointed a committee to study how best to organize and arm the Guardsmen in order to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies such as riots or floods. On March 8, 1916, Governor McClendon announced that an act had been passed authorizing the organization of two companies of Guardsmen into battalion size under command of a colonel with authority to use all necessary means for efficient military operations. This act also authorized purchase of arms and equipment by local governments in order to provide guard service “at any time whatsoever” without reimbursement from the state government. On November 5, 1917 Companies A and B were organized at Muscogee County courthouse under command of Colonel Landon Barnett with orders to provide military protection for county fairs scheduled between December 15th-19th inclusive. On January 3, 1918 Captain Alfred Waddell was given commandof Company C which consisted of twenty men recruited from Eyersville (southwest corner) along with four men from Milledgeville (northwest corner). These units were placed Army depot material at Centerville on I-70 eastbound until relieved by Company B from Decatur on February 17th when they took over duties at Decatur High School until relieved again on March 6th when they took over duties at Buford Municipal Airport where they remained until relieved by Company D from Hawkins County on April 3rd after serving at Hawkins Coliseum for one year while being used as decoys during World War I drills conducted there using Confederate soldiers who had been captured as part Of That war effort After World War I ended there was talk about disbanding all Guard Units but it did not happen because many people decided that this would be too expensive so instead these units continued working together through various exercises such as maneuvers or countermarch preparedness drills Company G formed in 1922 out of remnants left over after company F disbanded in 1921 In 1924 Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) classes were offered through Muscogee County Normal School which led to more guards being hired including those assigned permanently into units like Company G which became known as The Georgians In 1931 Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity members donatedivitaminsandFLAGstotheNationalGuardinBuford

Grant, who died in 1885. The town first appeared on maps in 1868 when it was named for Colonel Ebenezer Buford, a Union officer and governor of Alabama Territory from 1861 to 1865. In 1886, General Grant's widow donated land to the town so that it could be named for her husband after his death.
