The Marines of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment deployed to Buford, Georgia on October 10th in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. The battalion landed at the seaside town and quickly secured vital infrastructure such as a military hospital and airfield. The marines helped evacuate civilians and conducted combat patrols throughout the city.
Buford, Georgia is a small town in the southcentral part of the United States. The population was 5,878 at the 2010 census. Buford is located on the Chattahoochee River between Decatur and Athens. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The history of Buford goes back to 1805 when it was founded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest as a stop on his march from Fort Worth to Mexico City. In 1833, Buford became a county seat after being chosen by senators from Georgia as one of their state's five counties. The city was incorporated on November 3, 1885, and its first mayor was J.T. English. Buford, Georgia is a city in northern Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 23,599 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and the home of Buford State University. The first European to explore this area was Captain James Cook in 1778. He named it Eutaw Springs after his leader, Lt. Colonel John Eutaw of the First Regiment Provisional Militia (now known as The Georgia National Guard) who had been an early settler in what is now Buford. In 1802, land grants were made to a group of landowners which included James Fenton and Samuel Bibb who built a small town on the site called "Fulton". This name referred to both its location – on the banks of the Chattahoochee River – and to Fenton's ownership of some property east of town near present day Jacksboro Road. In 1847, a post office was established at "Fulton" (then spelled "Eutaw"), and mail reached the town by water from Atlanta via Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad lines. A depot was built on Cobb Street in downtown Fulton in 1851; that building served as both a courthouse and jail until 1903 when it burned down. In 1865–68, part of what is now Fulton County was explored by General Sherman during his March to Mideast Offensive when he destroyed much Confederate infrastructure including bridges over ravines along the way In 1907–08, cotton farmers in eastern Alabama began planting sorghum for export; when those crops failed due to lack of irrigation systems and pests, they moved westward into newly opened areas such as northeastern Georgia; this led directly to increased settlement around what is now Buford City limits where their products were consumed by people in surrounding counties
Buford is located in northwestern Georgia and was first settled by the Cherokee in the 18th century. The town was named for General James Buford, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1865, after a major fire destroyed much of downtown Buford, the city built a new library and opera house on what is now Main Street.
